  • Dry January has prompted Oliver's — a popular brunch spot on Second Street — to expand its menu with mocktails, seasonal specials and alcohol-free wines and beers in response to lower alcohol sales and changing customer habits. Bartender Hunter Bishop says the shift helps the bar offer a community space for healthier choices.  13WMAZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Visit Macon reported record-breaking tourism numbers from Fiscal Year 2025 as visitors spent $476 million countywide last year, according to President Gary Wheat.  13WMAZ

  • Mercer University's new president Penny Elkins held her first press conference after her inauguration (streamed live on 13WMAZ) and outlined her initial vision for the university.  13WMAZ
  • President Penny Elkins outlined her vision for Mercer's future during her inaugural address. The speech described plans to improve academic programs and campus facilities and set the stage for upcoming initiatives.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb County’s new short-term rental tax is in effect and adds $3 per night for stays under 7 days and $1.50 for longer stays up to 30 days—officials say it could generate $2.5 million annually for local projects and will evaluate its impact at year’s end.  13WMAZ
  • Macon officials said a new tourist tax takes effect today, but details on its impact remain unclear (city representatives did not specify expected changes for local businesses and visitors).  13WMAZ
