BUSINESS NEWS

  • GameStop will close 15 stores in Georgia as part of its plan to shutter 470 locations nationwide. The Dublin Commons (Central Georgia) store is expected to close by Jan. 31.  13WMAZ

CRIME NEWS

  • An inmate, Rachel Robinson, was found unresponsive in her cell on Sunday at Bibb County Jail and was pronounced dead later at Atrium Health Navicent; locals remember her for her kind gestures during her visits downtown.  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country music legends Alabama — featuring special guest Jamey Johnson — will perform on Thursday, May 7 at Atrium Health Amphitheater in Macon. Tickets go on sale Friday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m.  41 WMGT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tourism in Macon stays strong even after the holiday season as Visit Macon reported a Christmas market that drew over 18,000 visitors (tracked via anonymized cell phone data). City officials expect more guests to arrive for events like the Cherry Blossom Festival throughout 2026.  WPGA News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Paul A. Jones, president of Fort Valley State University, announced he will retire at the end of June—ending a decade of leadership and more than 24 years in Georgia higher education. He will complete his work fully to ensure a smooth transition.  41 WMGT
  • Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said the state will join a federal education tax credit program starting Jan. 1, 2027 — the credit gives up to $1,700 per donor when funds support approved nonprofit scholarship groups helping students with school costs.  WGXA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tucker Road bridge is closed for at least three months as a major improvement project begins to upgrade the roadway. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes while officials work to complete the project.  13WMAZ
  • Macon leaders are urging lawmakers to boost historic tax credits to help revive downtown. They say the move will protect historic buildings and attract new investment.  13WMAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Atrium Health Navicent opened a new primary care clinic in Perry on Tuesday at 2370 Houston Lake Road. The clinic offers family medicine, urgent care, lab tests & X-rays and will expand services as Middle Georgia grows.  41 WMGT
  • The Georgia Department of Public Health released a Restaurant Report Card covering inspections from January 12 to 16 across Middle Georgia, including Macon and surrounding counties. Scores ranged from 69 or below (unsatisfactory) to 100 (perfect), reflecting current food service safety standards.  41 WMGT

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Tattnall Trojans defeated Stratford 55-38 Tuesday night, led by 21 points from Whit Davidson and a strong defensive effort in their first region rotation, holding rivals under 40 in four region contests.
