COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb County has extended intake hours at Brookdale Resource Center and Hello House amid a winter storm watch as significant icing is expected in Middle Georgia — the centers will offer emergency warmth, meals, and support even for those without ID.  WGXA
  • A plumbing expert from Ricky Heath Plumbing warns that with an ice storm approaching, homeowners should insulate exposed pipes, let faucets drip, and know their main water shutoff valve because uninsulated pipes (from attics, garages, and crawl spaces) may freeze and burst, causing costly water damage.  13WMAZ
  • Community leaders and families gathered in downtown Macon to dedicate Josh Rogers Way in honor of the late Josh Rogers (former NewTown Macon president) and his vision for an inclusive city.  13WMAZ
  • On Thursday, Middle Georgia Honor Flights announced six Contour Airlines flights from Middle Georgia Regional Airport that will take veterans—including those from WWII, Korea and Vietnam as well as terminally ill veterans—to Washington, D.C. memorials for free.   • Tabias Williams, a teen from Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Georgia, is one of 22 national finalists in the Cox Mobile phone case design contest themed 'A World Within Reach – Future Icons,' and judges will select a grand prize winner later this spring to receive a $25,000 scholarship.  41 WMGT
  • Coach Todd Whetsel was named 'My Teacher Is Tops' at ACE, recognizing his dedication to education and mentorship in our community.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Brian Kemp and GEMA urged residents to assemble a winter emergency kit as a forecasted storm will hit the area this weekend; the kit should include essentials (flashlights, batteries, water, food, and car repair items) to help manage potential power and heat loss.  13WMAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Red Cross urges local blood donations as winter weather and flu season have cut the national supply by 35% amid 400 impacted drives. Three Macon blood drives are scheduled—Jan. 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Jan. 27 at Liberty Church, and Jan. 28 at American Red Cross’s Central Georgia office.  WPGA News
  • Forecast warnings of winter weather suggest hazardous roads and power outages may impact families beginning this weekend. The state declared an emergency as officials advise residents to prepare emergency kits, protect homes from pipe bursts, and keep pets safe & follow safety tips.  13WMAZ
