  • Bibb County Magistrate held free Valentine's Day weddings on Feb. 13, uniting high school sweethearts Sadaja and Chris Sutton along with other couples choosing a small, budget-friendly ceremony at the courthouse. Future participants must bring a valid marriage license and ID.  WGXA
  • Couples lined up Friday at Bibb County Magistrate Court to get married ahead of Valentine’s Day — Tony Chatfield and Venus Causey joined many others as they celebrated their commitment and shared advice for hopeful couples.  41 WMGT

  • City officials in Macon say the Urban Development Authority approved a letter of interest from Gaming & Leisure Properties to purchase the former JCPenney space at the Macon Mall for a potential $20M casino project pending state legalization of casino gambling, aiming to revitalize the mall area.  WPGA News

CRIME NEWS

  • Three individuals were charged with riot & battery after a fight broke out during the closing seconds of a girls’ basketball game at East Laurens High School, when spectators rushed the court and attacked players.  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Little Richard’s childhood home was moved from Fifth Avenue to Craft Street in 2017 and now serves as the Little Richard House & Resource Center. The museum, open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., displays memorabilia and offers community resources for the Pleasant Hill neighborhood.  WPGA News
  • The Mentors Project of Bibb County will host a Black History Downtown Heritage Walk on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Tubman Museum (310 Cherry St.) in Macon that will feature guided tours, a drumming workshop and live musical experience culminating in a community lunch.  WGXA

  • One hundred Northside High students will travel to New York City to perform in the 265th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 17 + the event gives the school a national spotlight.  13WMAZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials confirm smoky skies in East Macon come from a controlled burn by Piedmont National Wildlife Preserve today in Unit 10B, covering 373 acres 12 miles northwest of Gray. Drivers are advised to use headlights and obey posted signs near Pasture Field Road and Sugar Hill Road.  13WMAZ

  • James Harris, who has served as defensive coordinator since 2018, was named Westside’s head coach last month. He will lead the famed football team in a new region alignment + face tough competitors in upcoming games.  The Macon Melody
