  • Sister Deborah Mallott and the Daybreak team will host the 13th annual sleepout on Thursday, Feb. 26 at Carolyn Crayton Park and Daybreak at 174 Walnut Street in downtown Macon to support local homeless services. Residents unable to attend may donate online.  13WMAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park preserves 12,000 years of Indigenous history as America marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence — local efforts continue to bring tribal voices to this historic site. Annual Muscogee Indigenous Celebration events help educate the community and honor cultural heritage.  41 WMGT
  • Hay House will host Night at the Museum on Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at 934 Georgia Ave. in Macon — the event will feature live music by Macon Pops, cocktails, and heavy hors d’oeuvres with cocktail attire required and $125 tickets available online.  41 WMGT
  • Mercer University purchased the historic Capitol Theatre to keep downtown vibrant and offer a hands-on learning space for students, with plans to expand the lobby, upgrade restrooms, and refresh the facade. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rutland High, Rutland Middle, and Porter Elementary were placed on lockdown early Friday as law enforcement searched Skipper Road; officials confirmed all students and staff were safe and classes resumed by 10 a.m.  41 WMGT
  • Five Bibb County students will travel to Washington, D.C. this March as part of a new partnership between the Mentors Project and FVSU’s Cooperative Extension 4H Program, which aims to boost STEM skills+career readiness for local youth.  WGXA
  • Weaver Middle School hosted the Money Moves workshop last Friday to teach seventh- and eighth-graders about money management with Midsouth Community Federal Credit Union as part of its annual program to build financial stability and prepare students for life and career decisions.  41 WMGT

  • On Feb. 24, Macon-Bibb EMA will give away 1,300 free NOAA weather radios and 130 pillow shakers at the Macon Mall conference room from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Residents must show a valid Macon-Bibb ID and complete a short survey to obtain a device.  41 WMGT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb County will host a monthly men's mental health meetup on Feb. 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Serenity Entertainment Complex (427 Poplar Street) to offer a supportive forum for open discussion, hosted by the Macon Violence Prevention Program and Macon Mental Health Matters.  WPGA News

  • Southwest boys won the GHSA Region 2/Class A-Division I championship on Friday at Washington County — they will start their state tournament run next week.
