  • Participants in the annual Daybreak Sleepout will sleep outdoors tonight to raise $340,000 for homelessness services in Macon—organizers report about $230,000 raised so far and remote options are available at Piedmont Macon.  41 WMGT
  • Girl Scout Cookie season is underway in Macon and features a new cookie debut, with boxes costing $5 at Kroger, Walmart, Lowe’s, Bass Pro Shops and other local stores. The cookie sales end on March 8.  41 WMGT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist Peggy Whyte, known for her decades of cherry blossom art on local buses and storefronts, will paint cars at Acme on Riverside Drive on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with follow-up sessions on March 7 and March 14.  WGXA
  • Macon’s historic Douglass Theatre is celebrating 105 years this February with a Greek Step & Stroll Off as community members honor its role as a hub for Black entertainment and cultural legacy.  The Macon Melody
  • Art in Fashion opens March 6 at 6:00 p.m. at Lamar Arts (101 Plaza Way in the Historic Barnesville Depot), offering a free reception where community members will experience creative works by Macon-based designer Monique Nicole Pitts Taylor and other local artists blending fashion with art.  Middle Georgia Times

  • River Edge Community Service Board will purchase the old Cadence bank building (4885 Riverside Drive) for its planned headquarters, with engineers reviewing plans to begin construction by May. HEALTH NEWS

  • City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta and Upson Regional Medical Center signed a letter of intent to form a cancer care alliance that will bring advanced oncology services to West Central Georgia. Residents in Thomaston can soon receive treatments like chemotherapy and telemedicine close to home — expanding local care options.  Middle Georgia Times
  • The Food and Drug Administration recalled several Walmart Great Value cottage cheese products on Wednesday after routine checks flagged a pasteurization issue; shoppers in Georgia who bought the items between Feb. 17 and Feb. 20 should return them for a full refund as no illnesses have been reported.  13WMAZ
  • Former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy visited Macon this week to discuss the national loneliness epidemic and promote The Together Project, which provides small grants to fund neighborhood initiatives + help strengthen social ties.  The Macon Melody

  • Downtown Macon restaurant Loom Comfort Kitchen and Cocktails unveiled a new menu merging Southern comfort with French technique using locally sourced ingredients.
