COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Daybreak’s annual Sleepout fundraiser ended Friday morning as participants braved rainy conditions to support the homeless resource center in Macon. Attendees said the event was rewarding and highlighted its value for the community.  13WMAZ
  • Emily Hopkins began as Historic Macon Foundation’s executive director this February after nearly a decade with NewTown Macon, and she plans to lead downtown preservation while working with local partners + the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce to maintain the historic tax credit program.  The Macon Melody
  • Urban Development Authority is reimagining Pleasant Hill’s Linear Park with new pavilions, a cycle track, extra trees, and soon basketball courts and an exercise gym while coordinating mini-grants for events and repairing Third Street sidewalks ahead of the Cherry Blossom Festival on March 20 — a boost for community partnership.  The Macon Newsroom
  • Founder Alex Habersham announced the Black Pages will end its print edition and transition to digital in 2027, including a new app to connect local Black businesses. The publication, celebrating 35 Years Strong (Honoring our Past, Powering Our Future), remains focused on community economic growth.  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Hawkins in Macon, built in 1806, spurred early settlement and now hosts a Junior Docent Program for ages 10 to 18 that teaches local heritage and flag history (an undiscovered treasure for locals).  41 WMGT
  • The Museum of Arts and Sciences hosted Sky Over Macon, a monthly after-hours event with stargazing, planetarium shows and a guided Sweet Gum trail tour. Starting in March, the event will be on the third Friday with a special total lunar eclipse viewing planned for next Tuesday (weather permitting).  WGXA
  • Macon native Arthur E. Boardman built the city’s first public waterworks in the 1880s when growing needs shifted from wells to a modern system. He created detailed maps and led projects that formed the base for today’s water supply.  The Macon Melody

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Porter Elementary celebrated Black History Month on Friday, Feb. 27 with a parade, wax museum, and Divine Nine presentation at 9 a.m. Students re-enacted figures like Serena Williams (and others) while DA Anita Howard and Principal Regina English encouraged leadership and wise choices.  WGXA
  • Mount de Sales Academy celebrates 150 years today with a Founder’s Day celebration featuring live music, athletic and fine arts exhibits, historical displays, and a proclamation by Lester Miller at the school (est. 1876) that honors its faith-based legacy.  41 WMGT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority will launch on-demand Rapid Transit Pilot Zone II on Mar. 2 in south Bibb County. The service will connect neighborhoods with major employers and Middle Georgia Regional Airport and can be booked through the Rides on Demand app or by calling 478-803-2500 option 1.  41 WMGT
