CULTURE NEWS

  • The Otis Redding Foundation is opening the Otis Redding Center for the Arts in downtown Macon to offer music and art classes for youth ages 5 to 18—plans call for adding programs for toddlers and seniors later this year. The 15,000 square foot center has creative labs, rooms for lessons, an amphitheater and a recording studio, with a ribbon-cutting on March 18 and a public opening on March 22.  WGXA
  • Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park in Macon is named one of TIME’s World’s Greatest Places for 2025—making it one of 50 global must-visit sites and one of only 12 from the U.S. recognized for its cultural heritage and ongoing efforts to become America’s next National Park.  41 WMGT
  • Macon is set to break the Guinness record for the Largest Kazoo Ensemble at the Atrium Health Amphitheatre on March 28, 2025 (gates open at 4 p.m., performances start at 4:30 p.m. and the official attempt is at 6 p.m.) during the International Cherry Blossom Festival as Swedish rockers Diamond Dogs and comedian Ian Karmel take the stage. Tickets cost $5 with all proceeds going to the Otis Redding Foundation and the Otis Redding Center for the Arts as kazoo expert Rick Hubbard leads the record attempt.  Middle Georgia Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mercer University cancelled its GENERATE teacher residency program when federal funding for DEI was cut—this three-year plan with five school districts and a $9.6 million grant ended early on Feb. 10, leaving students with less tuition help. The program was meant to help teachers without certificates or those changing careers earn degrees while teaching.  The Macon Melody

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents of Macon-Bibb County are urged to prepare for dangerous weather this weekend as a strong storm system is expected to bring over 2 inches of rain—damaging winds, isolated hail, and possible tornadoes between 4 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday, local emergency management said. Officials advise securing outdoor items and charging emergency kits as they continue to monitor the storm's progress.  Middle Georgia Times
