CRIME NEWS

  • Christopher James Davis, the owner of a THCA store in Warner Robins, pleaded guilty to intimidating and beating a 65 year old unhoused woman just after midnight on October 18, 2024, and was sentenced on Thursday to 12 years in prison (part of a 25-year sentence).  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Macon-Bibb Fire Department hosts the annual Pink Pancake Breakfast for the Cherry Blossom Festival at Luther Williams Stadium in Carolyn Crayton Park from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The event serves all-you-can-eat pink pancakes, sausage, bacon, orange juice, milk, and coffee (adults pay $8 and children 5 and under pay $4 while partnering with Macon Bacon) and a second breakfast will be held on March 29 with the same schedule.  41 WMGT
  • Historic Macon's Spring Flea Market will run from March 28 to March 30, with ticketed VIP shopping on March 28 and free entry (8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 29 and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on March 30) as proceeds will help fund efforts to preserve local architecture and share history.  Middle Georgia Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents at Alexander II Elementary spoke at a Bibb County Schools board meeting on Thursday to ask why the contracts for Principal Angel Woodard and Assistant Principal Meredith Byrd were not renewed—parents say the vague notice has hurt trust and led to petitions as the district has not set plans for next year’s leadership. The district noted no decisions have been made regarding next year’s appointments.  WPGA News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Macon-Bibb County Commission approved an ordinance Tuesday naming the portion of Poplar Street between First Street and Third Street 'Bryan Nichols Way' to honor Bryan Nichols, who started the Macon Christmas Light Extravaganza. The ordinance includes a $500 appropriation from the county's general fund—new signs will be made soon.  41 WMGT
  • Georgia lawmakers approved a $1 billion tax rebate that now awaits Gov. Kemp's signature, promising automatic refunds up to $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of households, and $500 for married couples based on 2023 tax liability. The rebate, included in the 2025 budget, will be processed via the state revenue website—helping residents manage rising costs—once the bill becomes law.  13WMAZ
  • Macon Parks and Beautification will soon replace dead, dying and improperly planted trees downtown and around the city with new full-shade trees thanks to a private donation (crews will replace the old black bollards with decorative tree guards) and planting will begin in the coming weeks.  WGXA
