CRIME NEWS

  • A 10-year-old child died after being shot in Macon County—emergency crews responded promptly—and the GBI is investigating the incident.  41 WMGT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cherry Blossom Festival kicked off at Third Street Park Monday despite some rain, offering visitors pink cherry ice cream from Kroger, live music and a visit by Cherry the pink poodle. The event will continue all week with live music daily from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  41 WMGT
  • The city of Macon will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest kazoo ensemble at the Atrium Health Amphitheater on Friday, March 28—honoring the kazoo’s local roots from its invention in the 1840s by Alabama Vest. Festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. with special guests and a practice round, and $5 tickets will fund programs for young musicians.  WPGA News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon lawmakers, including Senator Kennedy who received nearly $4,000, Rep. Washburn who received $500, and Rep. Herring who received $1,800 from speed camera companies, now face votes on House Bill 225 and House Bill 651 as state leaders decide if these systems should be banned or limited—Macon-Bibb County paused ticketing since 2022.  13WMAZ
  • The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office has suspended school zone speed camera citations because pending legislation may ban these cameras; citations given before March 19 at 6:30 p.m. must still be paid—officials stress that traffic units will keep an eye on school zones for speeding drivers.  WPGA News
