CRIME NEWS

  • Houston County deputies are under investigation after an Atlanta mother said her 21-year-old son, Omar Wright, was brutally pulled from his car during a March 8 traffic stop for speeding that also detected marijuana—she claims he lost consciousness without prompt medical aid, while officials say an ambulance was called.  WGXA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon Mayor Lester Miller pledged $100 per citation given outside school zone hours after criticism of speed cameras + the move is meant to ease concerns over speeding enforcement.  13WMAZ
  • Georgia lawmakers have reintroduced a bill to establish Ocmulgee Mounds as the state's first National Park and Preserve. The bill, sponsored by Austin Scott, Sanford D. Bishop, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, aims to protect the historic site’s legacy and boost local tourism and economic growth — as it has been home to the Muscogee Nation for over 12,000 years.  41 WMGT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Macon-Bibb County Affordable Housing Fund is finding its way after nearly two years of trying to attract developers to build affordable projects in targeted areas using $7.5 million in federal COVID relief funds. The fund held a summit at Macon Mall to explain its program and has already given a loan to Habitat for Humanity for three homes and a $2 million loan for a 64-unit project in Pleasant Hill — construction for the latter is expected to start in August and take 14–18 months.  The Macon Melody

SPORTS NEWS

  • FPD beat Stratford 6-0 on March 25th at Bobby Hendley Field where Connor Strandmark struck out 14 batters on 111 pitches as the Vikings scored six runs on four hits and Stratford committed three errors—boosting the win—while the team improved their record to 12-3.  The Macon Melody
  • The Central Chargers beat the Northeast Raiders 3-0 on Tuesday night at Ed Defore Sports Complex as team captain Louden Busbee scored two goals and Moryah Mattox added one while goalkeeper Tacoyia Braswell made key saves. Coach Jennifer Tillery said the win gave the young team valuable experience ahead of upcoming region games.  The Macon Melody
  • On Tuesday night, the Central Chargers won a 10—0 game over Northeast with Adam Guerrero scoring four goals and Javon Hodges earning a hat trick with three goals in the first half. The win improved the team’s record to 3—8—1 and marked a key step in coach Eric McDonald’s rebuilding effort.  The Macon Melody
