  • Macon’s 43rd Annual International Cherry Blossom Festival ends this weekend with art shows, music and food events at several venues — many free for all. Police are searching for a man who allegedly fired shots during an argument — updates are expected soon.  WGXA

CRIME NEWS

  • A former Mercer Law student, Gregory Gallagher, was sentenced on March 26 to serve over six years in prison plus 15 years of supervised release and ordered to pay $169,649.12 in restitution for possessing more than 10,000 images of child sexual abuse material on his cell phone and cloud storage—authorities say the sentence sends a clear message against child exploitation.  41 WMGT
  • A former Mercer Law School student, 37-year-old Gregory Gallagher, pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography and was sentenced to six years in prison after agents discovered over 10,000 explicit images during search warrants of his Macon and Marietta homes — authorities said the findings underscore the fight against child exploitation — officials added.  WGXA
  • Bibb County Sheriff’s Office arrested Rickey Terrel Parks Jr. Thursday afternoon near Flewellyn Drive based on a tip from Macon Regional Crimestoppers and charged him with murder for his alleged role in the deadly January shooting on Hattie Drive that left 31-year-old Kyle Alexander Brown fatally wounded.  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today thousands will gather at the Macon amphitheater to attempt the Guinness record for the largest kazoo ensemble and bring a nearly 200-year legacy home to the city; renowned kazoo expert Rick Hubbard will lead the event.  41 WMGT
  • Greek iconographer Aristidis Kovaci and his team will finish the iconography on the altar and west wall at the Holy Greek Orthodox Church on First Street by the end of this week. The work is part of a 10-year project—Project Agape—and is designed to bring ancient tradition alive for parishioners.  The Macon Melody

  • Mount De Sales Academy in Macon welcomed a 12 week old therapy dog, Francis De Tails, to boost the mental health of students and staff + the puppy now greets students at drop-off and helps calm them during class while training to become a certified therapy dog by one year old.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Public schools for kindergarten through 8th grade will ban cell phones after a new law passed the legislature and goes to Governor Brian Kemp's desk. Lawmakers say the ban will help students learn better as local districts choose how to enforce it — although some worry about emergency contact.  WGXA
  • Drivers who receive a school zone speeding ticket in Macon face a $100 fine for a first violation and $150 for each additional offense; they may dispute their citation at Macon-Bibb Municipal Court by offering hard evidence such as written documents, video or photos—failing to pay can lead to a suspended vehicle registration.
