- ➤ Daybreak Day Resource Center announced Monday that its 12th Annual DePaul Sleepout raised nearly $330K to support DePaul USA & its mission to help end homelessness. Sister Deborah Mallott and Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell praised the event and said the funds will offer vital services and job training & skills to those in need. WGXA
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Urban Development Authority received a $310,000 grant from the National Park Service to restore the Dewitt McCrary house in Ft. Hawkins, which will become a cultural center for the Muscogee-Creek Nation near Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park. The county said phased repairs will fix the roof, siding, masonry, electrical and HVAC systems and will unveil developments in the (Mill Hill neighborhood) soon. WGXA
- ➤ The Estate of Otis Redding marked the 60th anniversary of his album, first released in March 1965 and now available on major digital platforms, as the event was noted on March 31. In addition, the Otis Redding Foundation opened the Otis Redding Center for the Arts (ORCA) on March 18 in downtown Macon to serve local music and arts programs. Middle Georgia Times
- ➤ Residents in Macon and Greater Middle Georgia enjoyed Monday’s events such as the Spring Break Art Camp at Artspace Macon and the final performance by the Macon-Mercer Symphony at The Piedmont Grand Opera House, while this week will bring a Hawaiian Luau at Monkey Joe’s, art exhibits, music concerts, a Taco and Tequila Bar Crawl and family activities that celebrate the arrival of spring. - ➤ Grammy-nominated Tyrese Gibson, known for Fast & Furious, will perform at the Macon Arts Center on April 4+ he is visiting Macon for the first time and plans to shop and meet local figures before his show. Doors open at 9 p.m. and close at 1 a.m., and tickets range from $80 general admission to $1,000 VIP packages+ food, bottle service and hookah will be available for guests 21 and older. 13WMAZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On March 31 at 6:08 p.m., the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce announced support for a bipartisan bill to establish Ocmulgee Mounds as Georgia’s first National Park and Preserve — an effort that will boost Middle Georgia’s economy and honor over 12,000 years of history. Federal lawmakers, local leaders and the Muscogee Creek Nation back the move — which will create protected land for outdoor recreation and new jobs. Middle Georgia Times
- ➤ On March 28, the Georgia Legislature passed the Fentanyl Eradication and Removal Act that will mandate a 10-year minimum sentence for trafficking 4–8 grams of fentanyl and up to 35 years for trafficking at least 28 grams—if signed by Gov. Brian Kemp, the law will take effect on July 1. Houston County officials added that tougher penalties are expected to deter local fentanyl dealers around South Macon. 13WMAZ
