- ➤ Hundreds of Central Georgians raised over $329,000 at Daybreak's annual sleepout event (designed to support Macon's homeless community) in a local fundraising drive. 13WMAZ
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Monroe County Sheriff's deputy shot a suspect at a Forsyth CVS on Tuesday afternoon while serving a warrant— the suspect was injured— Sheriff Brad Freeman said. 13WMAZ
- ➤ A 46-year-old Macon man, Terico Jaques Balkcom, pleaded guilty on March 31 to a federal gun charge for illegally possessing a firearm while on probation after being stopped for an obscured tag, and he now faces up to 15 years in prison (three years of supervised release and a maximum $250,000 fine) according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Middle District of Georgia. 41 WMGT
- ➤ Terico Jaques Balkcom, a 46-year-old Macon man with several prior convictions, pleaded guilty on Monday to illegal firearm possession while in custody for violating probation and now faces up to 15 years in prison after admitting on a jail phone to having a 9mm pistol during an arrest on May 20th — convicted felons cannot legally possess firearms. - ➤ Macon-Bibb County voted Tuesday to use SPLOST funds on public projects including buying 23 acres on Arkwright Road for a trail system and the Jumbo gas station on Spring Street for a new trailhead—costing $225,000 plus closing costs for the land and $1.1 million plus closing for the gas station near Mercer University's new medical school. County spokesperson Chris Floore said the commission also spent $3 million from school zone camera revenue to improve crosswalks and recruit police—steps aimed at boosting community safety and supporting riverfront development. - ➤ The Pedestrian Safety Review Board installed solar-powered crosswalk signs and flashing lights on First and Adams streets using $30,000 for a trial at 50 high-risk spots today—The Urban Development Authority announced the Bicentennial Park ribbon-cutting will take place on April 29 and a grant has been approved for the future Muscogee Cultural Center while ongoing driver shortages force the Transit Authority to run overtime shifts.
