CULTURE NEWS

  • Jack Castle, a veteran soap box derby car builder with 12 years of entries sponsored by Centenary United Methodist, built his creative car that is racing today near Washington Park—this year it is driven by his grandson-in-law Bill Snow as he considers future builds while nearing 82.  The Macon Melody

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bibb County School District is investigating a Rutland Middle School teacher who allegedly wrote a racial slur on a classroom board as photos and videos spread on Facebook. Parents say their children feel unsafe and are keeping them home (and officials have promised a full review with counseling available) as the inquiry continues.  13WMAZ
  • At Cirrus Academy, students are coding drones—tackling programming challenges to build teamwork and problem-solving skills for future careers.  13WMAZ
  • Cirrus Academy students in the Robotics and Drone Club are coding drones, solving programming challenges, and enhancing teamwork to build skills for future careers—earning fourth place in robotics last fall while now focusing on drone technology. The club is supported by a Department of Defense program at Robins Air Force Base—providing funding, materials, and mentoring to help shape these students' career paths.  13WMAZ
  • Bibb County Schools notified Rutland Middle School families late Friday that a teacher allegedly wrote racially insensitive language on an electronic board (a video shows another teacher confronting her) and said the district is investigating the matter and offering counseling services.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • GDOT confirmed that repairs on the 2nd Street bridge will begin Monday — work may be finished by the week’s end if weather holds after a truck carrying construction equipment damaged several beams last week.  13WMAZ
  • Former Director Gary McCoy said he reported long-standing issues at the Amerson Water Treatment Plant but previous management delayed funding fixes—officials at the Macon Water Authority are now starting $5 million in emergency repairs while board members call for more transparency in decision-making.  13WMAZ
  • The Bibb County Sheriff's Office said crews are working to remove a large oak tree—fallen during the storms—that is blocking Zebulon Road between Madison Subdivision and Powers Plantation; drivers are asked to take an alternate route.  13WMAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Thursday afternoon, Piedmont Macon Medical Center raised the Donate Life flag to remind everyone that organ donation can save lives for about 4,700 Georgians waiting for transplants. The ceremony showed that one donor can save up to eight lives and help many more through tissue donations.  13WMAZ
