COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, Macon-Bibb County awarded $243,000 in community development block grants to Bibb County groups to help people in need with lifesaving services — including meals, supplies, and a one-stop center for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors — using leftover COVID relief funds. 13WMAZ
- ➤ Serenity Courtyard in Macon has opened with 26 one-bedroom homes for homeless seniors with mental illness. River Edge Behavioral Health leads the project and offers wraparound support services — including case management and help with doctor appointments — as 18 homes are filled and the team plans to rent the remaining units by early May. 41 WMGT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Turquell Cone, who pleaded not guilty to the murder of Lester Summers on Grier Street on September 10th, is set to go on trial this week under Judge David L. Mincey. WGXA
- ➤ A 40-year-old man was fatally shot multiple times between two homes on Grier Street—officers said his body was found at the scene—and the accused is set to stand trial—court proceedings are expected to start soon. 13WMAZ
- ➤ Warner Robins man Jayveon Bivins is accused of killing his girlfriend and a dog and is set for trial this week—records show the case began with an abandoned car. 13WMAZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Brian Kemp signed a law Tuesday in Atlanta that lowers the income tax rate and gives up to $500 as a tax rebate for Georgia residents who filed returns in 2023 and 2024. The bill cuts the 2025 rate from 5.39% to 5.19% and will lower the rate each year until it reaches 4.9%—taxpayers may receive less if they do not owe enough tax. 13WMAZ
- ➤ The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission met and rejected Lamar Advertising’s request for a new digital billboard on Riverside Drive because it did not meet the 5,000-foot spacing rule — and approved repainting a Second Street building’s brick facade as well as allowing an accessory building after a confirming survey. The board also approved a new urgent care clinic next to Aldi and several routine updates like handicapped-access modifications, window changes, and tree removals. The Macon Newsroom
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Georgia Department of Public Health released a Restaurant Report Card showing food service inspection scores for Middle Georgia restaurants inspected between April 7 and April 11. The report shows scores from unsatisfactory to perfect — with red marking scores below 70, black for scores between 70 and 99, and green for a perfect score — to help track how well restaurants meet health standards. 41 WMGT
