COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at River North Country Club in Macon, 120 players participated in the Salvation Army Charity Golf Tournament, marking 125 years of service by raising funds for the homeless shelter and programs that support families, individuals, and veterans.   • Macon native Jeff Battcher worked with sculptor Timothy Schmalz to create a replica of the Sheltering statue that Pope Francis blessed at the Vatican in November 2022— the new statue now stands at Daybreak to honor the homeless and remember the late Pope's care for the poor. Battcher, a board member of DePaul USA, said the work is a heartfelt tribute and a sign of the community's ongoing support for those in need.  13WMAZ
  • Brian's Giant Subs will donate part of its sales to Stepping Stone each Monday in April in honor of Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month—this initiative supports local child advocacy and sexual assault services.  13WMAZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Lakeshia Jordan was thrown to the ground at the DFCS office on March 19—despite explaining she has a rod in her arm—and a Bibb County deputy reportedly initiated a physical encounter, prompting the NAACP Macon branch to seek surveillance footage and dismissal of her charges.  41 WMGT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Macon native Jeff Battcher said he saw Pope Francis bless the original Sheltering statue at the Vatican in November 2022 — standing just feet away from the event — and he is now bringing a replica to Daybreak. Battcher will display the sculpture to share the religious moment with local residents.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Georgia DECAL announced the Quality Rated Workforce Bonuses program to pay eligible full-time child care staff a $500 bonus each year in 2025. More than 34,000 early education workers at Quality Rated providers will benefit from the $17 million annual investment funded by the federal Child Care and Development Fund — the bonus rewards staff who meet state standards.  41 WMGT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia leaders expressed condolences after Pope Francis died Monday following a pneumonia battle at age 88, and Governor Kemp emphasized that his legacy should guide us to care for one another. Local officials and church representatives remembered that he was the first pope from the Americas—an honor marking a historic moment during this period of mourning.  13WMAZ
  • The Georgia Environmental Protection Division will enforce summer burn restrictions from May 1 to September 30 in 54 counties to reduce smoke and ozone pollution. Affected areas like Bibb & Houston must follow strict fire safety rules & burn yard waste only when conditions are safe.  41 WMGT
