  • United Way of Central Georgia will host United We Dine for Brookdale on May 14, inviting locals to dine at restaurants and food trucks to support the Brookdale Resource Center’s services for families experiencing homelessness. CULTURE NEWS

  • Friends of the Library is hosting its annual book sale from April 24-26 at the Round Building in Carolyn Crayton Park. Shoppers can find used books for $1-2 with lower prices on Sunday, and nearly 100 volunteers from library staff + deputies and students support this fundraiser.  The Macon Melody

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Howard Middle School in Macon earned a 2025-26 Kind School designation from Teach Kindness today — one of only three in Georgia chosen among 32 nationwide. The school is recognized for teaching kindness alongside academics and empowering student-led community projects.  41 WMGT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State Forester Johnny Sabo issued a burn ban yesterday in most of Central and all of South Georgia amid severe drought and rising wildfires. The prohibition covers prescribed burns and yard debris burning (affecting counties from Harris to Columbia) and officials urge compliance to protect air quality.  13WMAZ
  • A 27,000-acre wildfire in central Georgia is causing thick smoke and has forced state officials to declare a state of emergency — residents in affected areas are advised to check local air quality updates.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Macon Bibb County EMA installed 50-foot-tall emergency sirens on Wednesday to alert residents about severe weather, as part of a three-million-dollar upgrade. Officials said the system will continue improving alert capabilities over the next several weeks.  41 WMGT
  • Veterans met with Dublin VA leadership at a town hall on Wednesday at the American Legion post on Thomaston Road in Macon (informational tables provided details on services like mental health and burial benefits).  WGXA
  • Macon-Bibb leaders have selected a design group to help plan a new hotel and convention center in the area.  13WMAZ

  • The ACE girls soccer team dominated Gordon Central with a 10-0 playoff win that featured four goals by Lily Bivins and solid team support (propelling them into the second round of the GHSA state tournament). They will face No. 15 Pepperell next week.  The Macon Melody
