ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Checkers fast-food restaurant on Pio Nono Ave was closed after a grill caught fire Sunday at 5:40 p.m.—staff had extinguished the flames before firefighters arrived and inspectors checked the building this morning to plan repairs for reopening.  WGXA
  • A log truck collided with a train at an Oglethorpe crossing on Stagecoach and Buckeye Roads in Macon County around 10:30 a.m. Monday, killing 43-year-old driver Eric Walton+ investigators from the county sheriff’s office and Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance Division are probing the crash+ no further details have been released.  WGXA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A longtime Macon flea market that operated for over a decade announced it will close with only 40 days notice—vendors said the short notice left them scrambling while customers were not surprised.  13WMAZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies arrested a Macon man Sunday evening after he broke into a storage facility on Key Street, and witnesses said he broke glass to force entry — officers identified him as 59-year-old Terry Womack Sr. who now faces charges for felony burglary and theft by deception.  WGXA
  • Judge Connie Williford threw out an indictment against Byron Police Officer James Carroll—accused of shooting a man outside McDonald's in October 2023—after the Macon District Attorney's Office improperly instructed the grand jury, and former prosecutor Darryl Cohen noted the rare decision as the DA's office plans to retry the case before a new grand jury.  13WMAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historic Macon is hosting American writer, naturalist, and environmental activist Janisse Ray for a talk on why place matters on May 3rd at 10 a.m.—tickets cost $10 with discounts available for members.  Middle Georgia Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • River Edge Behavioral Health Center said it might close in five years if workers do not improve, as its CFO noted the organization lost $5 million last fiscal year and spent $1.7 million on overtime so far this fiscal year. The center is working to boost productivity and manage plans for a new headquarters — a project that may cost more because of soil contamination — while seeking help from local officials.  The Macon Newsroom
