COMMUNITY NEWS

  • George McCanless, a longtime leader in Macon’s nonprofit space, said he will retire as CEO of United Way of Central Georgia at the end of this year—his retirement follows over a decade of service—and the organization is starting its search for a new president to guide its work forward.  13WMAZ
  • The Women's Conference 2025 'WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER!' will feature nightly services and free basic wellcare checks by Houston Healthcare at 10:00 a.m. on June 6—experts will also discuss key health topics.  Middle Georgia Times
  • Hay House in Macon is hosting its 30th annual Spring Stroll Tour of Gardens and Homes from May 1 to 4, featuring a garden party, a concert, and self-guided tours. The garden party took place on May 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.—the concert is happening today from 7 to 9 p.m. and self-guided tours will follow on May 3 and 4.  41 WMGT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ocmulgee Brewpub in downtown Macon (known for its burgers) closed on Wednesday due to a broken fume hood motor. The director said repairs began quickly and it reopened by (5 p.m.) on Thursday.  13WMAZ

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge declared a mistrial Wednesday for Jaylen Smith and Jordan Mullis—accused of fatally shooting Montavious Raines, Jr. on Nov. 19—in Macon after a prosecution witness made impermissible statements, and a written order with details will be issued next week.  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today downtown, residents can enjoy First Friday events featuring art exhibits, live music and community displays. The schedule includes Rhonda Miller’s 'Poker Face' exhibit at The 567 Center for Renewal with a reception from 5-8 p.m., a tour of the Emergency Management Operations Center now called The Bunker at 700 Poplar St.—and pop-up art and wellness activities at other local venues.  The Macon Melody

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 200 students at Northeast High School learned CPR after a weeklong hands-on workshop hosted by Macon Black Culture and Mags CPR Life Changing Destiny. The training taught them to use a defibrillator and perform CPR (30 chest compressions and 2 breaths) in small groups (of six) to prepare for emergencies.  41 WMGT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Alabama native Kami Billingslea shared her family recipe for bacon-wrapped Conecuh bites used for tailgating and noted her son Jake’s role with Macon Bacon. Bacon Fest will take place at Luther Williams Field on May 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. — featuring a bacon cook-off with celebrity judges — as the team prepares for its season start on May 31.  The Macon Melody

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mercer's T.J. Moore, a key defender who helped the Bears win a Southern Conference title, received an NFL mini-camp invite from the New York Giants after the draft this week. FPD's tennis teams won the state titles in Macon, and ACE's girls won the area title—while the boys placed second to earn a spot in the state championship.  The Macon Melody
