CULTURE NEWS

  • A local restaurant in Macon celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Tuesday, May 5 by offering special menu dishes and cultural activities that honored Latin traditions; the event attracted many locals who gathered to enjoy the festivities.  13WMAZ
  • Mercer University campus is transformed for The Comeback King production with updated sets — creating a vibrant space for local talent — and performances are expected soon.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bibb County Schools named its top academic performers for the Class of 2026, including valedictorians and salutatorians recognized for academic achievement, leadership and community service. Top students have accepted offers from regional universities + are set to begin higher education this fall.  41 WMGT
  • Bibb County Schools held a signing celebration Tuesday in Macon to honor graduating seniors committing to military service. Students from several high schools, including Central, Howard, and Westside, were recognized by active-duty service members (many had participated in JROTC).  41 WMGT
  • The Bibb County School District is considering merging VIP Academy with its in-school hybrid programs to cut costs and address declining enrollment. Virtual community meetings are set for May 11 and May 27, and any changes may take effect in the 2027-28 school year.  The Macon Melody

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Twiggs County Sheriff's Office chaplain is assisting first responders fighting wildfires in South Georgia today — providing support and needed supplies as crews work to protect the community.  13WMAZ
  • Macon-Bibb Commissioners approved a 12-month interim agreement with Lovejoy Capital to study upgrades at Lake Tobesofkee, including glamping units and improved park amenities, on Tuesday. Some nearby residents voiced concerns about environmental impacts and increased commercialization.  13WMAZ
  • Rep. Mike Collins visited Cordele today during early voting as he campaigns for a U.S. Senate nomination, stressing affordable taxes and local support for farmers. He cited enacted legislation — notably tax cuts — as proof of his commitment to local issues.  WGXA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Piedmont Macon stresses the importance of recognizing stroke signs (balance problems, vision changes, face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty) and urges residents to call 911 immediately if symptoms occur due to high blood pressure risks.  41 WMGT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three local schools—FPD, Stratford, and Central Fellowship—earned top playoff seeds in baseball and girls soccer tournaments. Fourteen teams from seven schools will compete in sports playoffs starting Thursday and Friday.  The Macon Melody
  • The ACE girls team defeated Bremen 4 to 0 Monday night at home in the GHSA Class A Division I playoffs, advancing to the state semifinals and setting up a rematch with Model this Thursday. Coach Robby Jones said the team showcased precise passing and strong defense in match.  The Macon Melody
