COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents gathered at Macon Mall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6 for the 14th Annual Age-Friendly Community Celebration honoring Macon-Bibb County as the nation's first AARP-designated Age-Friendly City (featuring food vendors and local resources).  WGXA
  • AgGeorgia Farm Credit is accepting applications for its 2026 Community Mission Fund grants offering up to $5,000 to boost agricultural literacy and support rural communities in Georgia. Eligible nonprofits must apply online by June 1.  Middle Georgia Times
  • Sgt. Sahkera Wooten, a veteran deputy with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, is recognized for nearly 20 years of dedicated service and local outreach that supports families and seniors in Macon.  WGXA

  • Macon resident Chris Turner remembered his mentor Ted Turner as a television genius after the 87-year-old passed away Wednesday. He said his start at CNN, launched under Ted’s guidance, filled his career with adventure (working with him felt like joining a family).  13WMAZ
  • Tap Out Productions is filming scenes for a new movie in Macon today, and local leaders say the production will boost business for hotels, restaurants (among other attractions) in the community.  41 WMGT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wesleyan College is celebrating 190 years (the first to award degrees to women) today, marking a key milestone in local education and a long tradition of empowering women in our community.  WPGA News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Macon woman said daily drives on Woodsdale Terrace have become difficult because of potholes. Macon-Bibb County said repaving is planned but did not provide a start date.  13WMAZ
  • Gov. Kemp signed a tax rebate bill in March for one-time refunds based on filing status, and the Department of Revenue will begin issuing surplus refunds within two weeks. Eligible taxpayers will receive refunds in batches over four to six weeks via direct deposit or check.  13WMAZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • FPD’s Keon Johnson, a top local baseball prospect and senior shortstop, posted a strong 2-for-4 performance Monday night in a 10-2 win, and his Vikings will begin state championship playoffs on May 15 at Georgia Southern’s J.C. Clements Stadium (after a 24-game win streak).  The Macon Melody
