- ➤ County officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday morning to begin a $2.05 million SPLOST-funded upgrade of Frank Johnson Rec Center, which will add new outdoor courts, a pool, a playground, and other facilities. The renovations, set to finish in September, will also include indoor updates such as a conference room and weight room—continuing Frank Johnson’s legacy in Unionville. The Macon Melody
- ➤ Rachel Umana founded Bike Walk Macon to make Macon safer and improve bike and pedestrian access. Her organization organizes free rides and open streets initiatives—efforts that grew dedicated bike lanes from one mile to 12 miles—and promotes policies that require all new road projects to serve every traveler. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 53-year-old man was struck by a Plymouth SUV while walking south on the 7300 block of Knoxville Road early today at 12:46 a.m.—he was pronounced dead at the scene and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. 41 WMGT
- ➤ Tiffany Slaton—described by her family as an adventure lover with a heart of gold—is a Twiggs County dialysis tech living on the West Coast who is missing after a camping trip and her family is asking for help finding her. 13WMAZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Northeast High School named Martravious Little the new head boys basketball coach after a season that finished 2-22 (worst in their region). The school will host a meet-and-greet today at 5:30 p.m. in its auditorium to introduce Little and begin rebuilding the team. 41 WMGT
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Mercer Bears women's lacrosse team clinched their fourth consecutive Big South Tournament Championship last Sunday, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The team will face Florida at 4 p.m. on Sunday in Gainesville—if they win they will meet either Stanford or the University of Denver in the next round. WGXA
- ➤ Coach Jeremy Wiggins of Northeast High was inducted into the Macon Sports Hall of Fame and said the honor shows his players that hard work pays off+ he credited his wife and parents for their support throughout his career. WGXA
- ➤ Rhythm and Rally partners with the Macon Area Tennis Association to launch the beginner-friendly New Red Ball Series offering tennis classes every Thursday in the summer from 6 to 8 p.m.—a free demo intro class is held today to kick off the program for National Tennis Month. 41 WMGT
