COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Macon Bacon will host its first-ever Bacon Fest at Luther Williams Field on May 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—the free event will include a bacon cook-off with celebrity judges, live music, food trucks and over 60 vendors.  41 WMGT
  • Macon hosts a wide array of Mother's Day weekend events—ranging from a walk and coffee today at Amerson River Park to art workshops, races, live music shows, and community gatherings planned for Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11 at local venues.  WGXA
  • Macon held its 13th Annual Age-Friendly Celebration at the Macon Mall to mark its designation as the first age-friendly city in the nation by AARP and the World Health Organization. Residents of all ages enjoyed refreshments, games and dancing as state AARP president Myrtle Habersham highlighted improvements in housing, transportation and outdoor spaces.  WGXA
  • Miss Macon will host the 15th Annual Mentors and Manners Tea Party at Historic Hay House from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 18, where children ages 5 to 12 can join titleholders including Miss Georgia (registration is due by May 10 and children pay $50 while parents pay $30).  41 WMGT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 9-year-old in Byron was hit by an SUV just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday—and police reported the child was placed in critical condition at a local hospital.  13WMAZ
  • A nine-year-old bicyclist from Byron was hit by an SUV near Murdock Lane on Wednesday at 5:17 p.m. and taken to Children's Hospital in Macon where she remains in critical condition—Byron Police are investigating the crash.  WGXA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Longleaf Distilling Co. in Macon announced on May 8th that its Heirloom American Whiskey and Cask Strength Heirloom American Whiskey earned Double Gold Medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition—each receiving a 99-point rating from 70 judges. This achievement follows earlier awards for its other products and underscores the distillery's commitment to quality and innovation.  Middle Georgia Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The bronze statue of soul singer Otis Redding now stands at the entrance of the Zelma Redding Amphitheater at the Otis Redding Center for the Arts in downtown Macon after being moved from Gateway Park. It now serves as the centerpiece of an arts corridor that includes the Otis Redding Museum—honoring his lasting impact on music and the community.  Middle Georgia Times
  • Columnist Ed Grisamore honored the legacy of local single mothers—Magnolia Edwards, Jewell Henderson, Ella Mae Fincher, and Lucy Ellington—by recounting their sacrifices in raising their sons and the lasting marks they left on our community.   • Northeast High School seniors were honored in a luncheon today with local leaders and partners that celebrated achievements and shared lessons for future success—event support included a $15,000 grant from Macon-Bibb County and plans for new programs like clothing pantries and CPR training.  WGXA
