COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mayor Lester Miller hosted a press conference at 3:00 p.m. yesterday (Kings Park Community Center) to launch the Macon Good Neighbors program that connects residents with vital resources while improving lighting, cleanups, and park upgrades; the initiative, which started months ago in Kings Park, now also serves Unionville and Houston Avenue with plans to expand to Payne City.  WGXA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Diesel prices have risen to $5.11 per gallon in Macon—triggered by Iran’s war which disrupted 20% of global oil supply—leading local farmers like Dickey Farms to adjust equipment as higher fuel costs may push up food prices.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Public schools must print the 988 hotline on student ID badges for grades 6-12 this fall under a new law signed on Tuesday. The measure boosts access to mental health support & costs nothing extra to schools.  41 WMGT
  • A Houston County mother and her son reached major education milestones just days apart in Perry. Ashlyn Ward earned her associate degree from Central Georgia Technical College and her son, Keelan Battle, graduated from Perry High School — he will attend Florida A&M University this fall while Ward hopes for a job at Robins Air Force Base.  13WMAZ
  • Students at Academy for Classical Education learned about careers on Wednesday during a schoolwide Career Day in Macon. They explored fields from broadcasting & engineering to health care & public safety through local professionals presenting to each grade group.  41 WMGT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb commissioners approved a contract last week to hire a Massachusetts firm that will clean up homeless encampments and connect residents with housing and resources; the plan provides organized storage for belongings and shelter options for pets.  41 WMGT
  • Governor Kemp signed sweeping changes to medical cannabis law on Tuesday, expanding eligibility by adding lupus and allowing vaping for patients over 21. Fine Fettle’s general manager said the law gives clearer guidance and fast relief options for flare-ups (helping more residents access treatment).  13WMAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Naomi Kirkman-Bey at Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center warns that stroke symptoms in women may be different from those in men. She encourages women in Macon to know the BEFAST signs such as balance problems, eye changes, and face drooping and to call 911 immediately if they occur.  41 WMGT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local leaders celebrated progress on affordable housing on Villa Esta Avenue with a frame-signing ceremony. The plan replaces blighted structures near Bruce Elementary School with five new single-family homes that may begin marketing within 30 days as part of the neighborhood's revitalization.  WGXA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bibb County schools honored top student athletes at the annual BIBBSPY awards Monday night (Central High won 16 awards including district Female Athlete of the Year for Tacoyia Braswell as Howard's Ta’Shawn Poole earned Male Athlete of the Year).  The Macon Melody
  • Central Fellowship (CFCA) hosted the Gatewood Gators Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the state playoffs. The 20-1 Lancers, the top seed in Class 2A, aimed for a third straight state title before their seniors graduate Friday.  The Macon Melody
  • The Mercer Bears upset No. 3 Georgia Tech with a 12-9 win in Atlanta on Tuesday at Mac Nease Baseball Park where key Central Ga natives Stephens + Garnett boosted the team’s effort. They now prepare for their final SoCon matchup against East Tennessee State ahead of tournament play.  13WMAZ
