CRIME NEWS

  • On May 18 at 1:03 a.m. on Poplar Street, deputies responded to a hit-and-run that left a 36-year-old man in critical condition and later arrested 35-year-old Mykia Tenequia Williams on charges of hit-and-run resulting in serious injury or death—she is held without bond as investigators probe the incident.  41 WMGT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Otis Redding Center for the Arts is now open on Cotton Avenue in Macon—built on the site where Nu-Way Weiners once stood—and was established by Otis Redding’s family after more than three years of planning to offer music education for children ages 5 to 18. The 15,000-square-foot facility features recording studios, rehearsal spaces, classrooms and a performance amphitheater, received $11 million in funding from private donations and sponsors including a $1 million contribution from Zelma Redding, and will host open house events soon.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Bibb Blue Marble Academy in Macon collected $449 through in-classroom competitions and fun activities for the Change for Change project to help new mothers at Rotifunk Hospital in Sierra Leone — a project that taught them empathy and math skills — showing how local students make a global impact.  WGXA
  • Senior tennis player Ja’Toria Sherman made history today by receiving a $6000 scholarship from the Southern Tennis Foundation—making her the first student in Macon to win the award. She will use the funds for housing as she attends Kennesaw State University to study Elementary Education and English.  41 WMGT
  • Bibb County School District named 14 seniors as Class of 2025 Valedictorians and Salutatorians, honoring academic excellence and leadership across local high schools (Central, Howard, Northeast, Rutland, Southwest, Westside and VIP Academy). The students plan to pursue college degrees in fields like medicine, business and engineering at various universities.  41 WMGT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who served in the DNC and Biden Administration, launched her campaign for governor today. She said she will fight high housing costs, limited healthcare coverage, and corporate landlords while proposing to eliminate income taxes for teachers—promising to build on policies that have helped Georgia families.  41 WMGT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Public Health released this week’s Restaurant Report Card that showed food service inspection scores for Middle Georgia restaurants inspected from May 12 to May 16. The report used ratings—unsatisfactory for scores 69 and below, satisfactory for scores 70 to 99, and perfect for scores of 100—to inform consumers about restaurant health standards.  41 WMGT
  • Macon-Bibb County reminded residents that free mental health resources are available after a violent weekend that included a mass shooting at a local bar. Macon Mental Health Matters compiled a list of providers offering free counseling, grief support and therapy services along with a free two-day symposium scheduled for May 23 & 24 at South Bibb Recreation Center.  WGXA
