BUSINESS NEWS

  • BrightFarms Greenhouse opened yesterday in Macon and will soon grow both conventional and organic salad produce to supply the southeast; Cox Farms president Steven Bradley said the facility will create jobs and provide fresh food at 3037 Airport East Parkway — one of three technologically advanced greenhouses on the planet — for the region.  WGXA

CRIME NEWS

  • A stabbing at Bibb County Jail on Wednesday left 22-year-old Breele Johnson dead and four inmates injured; her family blamed lax security (doors were left unlocked) for the chaos and is now demanding accountability.  13WMAZ
  • Gwen Westbrooks, president of the Macon-Bibb NAACP, said she is stunned by deadly stabbings at Bibb County Jail that left one inmate dead and four injured Wednesday. She will meet with Mayor Lester Miller and Georgia's NAACP president to discuss jail safety measures—her planned town hall meeting in June aims to drive change.  WGXA
  • A 22-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday night at Autumn Trace Apartments on Rocky Creek Road — deputies arrived around 7:30 p.m. and authorities are investigating the incident.  WGXA
  • After a deadly stabbing at Bibb County Jail—where five inmates were injured, including one who died—Macon-Bibb County Commissioner Stanley Steward and former Commissioner Elaine Lucas called for immediate reforms while the sheriff’s office investigated the incident and notified inmates’ families.  WGXA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • School zone cameras in Central Georgia will operate during summer school sessions as allowed by state law; in Macon-Bibb County, cameras at schools like Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary and John Lewis Elementary will only enforce speed limits when the school zone lights are flashing until June 26—other counties follow varied schedules based on summer school programs.  13WMAZ
  • Perry’s budget proposal calls for planned utility fee increases & employee raises, prompting concern among residents on fixed incomes. The proposal is set for review and may lead to higher bills in the coming months.  13WMAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mercer University School of Medicine will open a new 34000 square foot medical center this summer in downtown Macon to provide care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The facility will combine River Edge Behavioral Health’s crisis services with Mercer’s outpatient care—offering primary, dental and therapy services while hosting an open house on Monday, June 9 at 10 a.m. with state funding covering its costs.  13WMAZ
  • This summer, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities from across Georgia will come to Macon for crisis services and routine care such as physical exams, mammograms, and dentistry. On Monday, the new $23.7 million Crisis Services and Diagnostic Center on 750 Hazel St. will open, built by DBHDD+River Edge Behavioral Health Center+Mercer University School of Medicine to fill a gap in care.  The Macon Newsroom
