COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bibb County’s summer camp program is operating in eight centers with 865 children enrolled and costs $30 per week over six weeks—covering meals and activities. The camps will run until July 11 and organizers will gather feedback from parents to improve the program.  13WMAZ
  • Bernard Bronner, owner of Unique II Auto Detailing — a business operating for 33 years — said a nearby vacant building has become a homeless encampment with trash and rats scaring customers away, and he said repeated calls to code enforcement and the sheriff’s office have not fixed the problem.  13WMAZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Bibb County deputies said a man robbed the 567 Center for Renewal in downtown Macon at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon—he stole a phone and money before fleeing—and they ask anyone with information to call the sheriff’s office or Crime Stoppers.  41 WMGT
  • The Bibb Sheriff’s Office said three suspects have been arrested in connection with the May 18 Midtown Daiquiri shooting that left three dead – officers are now seeking a person of interest seen on camera wearing a red jacket as the investigation continues.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Miller announced six new justice reform initiatives at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center to cut jail overcrowding, expand mental health care and boost reentry while saving taxpayers $2.5M, and he said violent offenders would not be eligible for the changes. Commissioner Stewart and community members praised the reforms as an audit of 150 nonviolent inmates is set to begin within 30 days—with a progress report expected next month.  13WMAZ
