- ➤ Macon nurse Patricia Prime, who lost her mother to childbirth complications as an infant, is honored as the new Community Hero Award recipient by Piedmont Macon. She works as a nurse, doula, and educator by hosting a free maternal health expo each year to raise awareness about health disparities—especially among black women in the area. 13WMAZ
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said 25-year-old Christopher Clyde Valentine Jr., wanted in connection with the triple shooting at Mid-Town Daiquiri Bar & Grill on May 18, was found dead at his Macon home (from a self-inflicted gunshot wound) and was pronounced dead by the coroner. 41 WMGT
- ➤ A 16-year-old boy was charged with murder after a shooting at Autumn Trace Apartments in Macon left 22-year-old Marcus Cunningham Jr dead on June 5—deputies arrested him on Wednesday and he was taken to Macon Youth Regional Detention Center while investigators probe the case. WGXA
- ➤ Two suspects were arrested after a stolen vehicle chase, shootout and hostage standoff in Middle Georgia on Thursday, with law enforcement agencies reporting no officer injuries — multiple agencies worked together to resolve the dangerous incident. 41 WMGT
- ➤ On Thursday, Perry man Joshua Estep, 44, was sentenced to 15 years for trafficking fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine after police stopped him on I-75—he was also fined $100,000 and banned from Houston County. WGXA
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Macon will celebrate Juneteenth with the 33rd Annual Freedom Festival starting Saturday, June 14 featuring live drumming, reenactments and youth performances. The city will also hold a neighborhood reunion banquet, a parade on Sunday, history tours on Monday and a Black Music Month event at the Tubman Museum on June 19 + additional community activities. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bibb County School District is hiring dozens of teachers and career changers to fill open positions and ease the national shortage — the district supports new hires through an Emerging Educators Program that helps them earn certification. Don Chambers, hired at a recent job fair, will begin teaching science at a middle school this fall. 13WMAZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Due to a burst pipe at Porterfield Baptist Church, voters in the Rutland 2 precinct will cast ballots at Mikado Baptist Church for the special primary election on June 17—and the temporary site will also be used for a runoff on July 15. The Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections announced the change in accordance with Georgia law. 41 WMGT
- ➤ State Sen. John F. Kennedy spoke Wednesday at the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce headquarters on Poplar Street to praise his newly passed tort reform law that will lower insurance rates and protect local businesses. He announced his run for lieutenant governor on June 2 and said his plan aims to lure insurance companies back to the state—an effort he says will support Georgia’s growth. The Macon Melody
