COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local manufacturer Prince Service & Manufacturing is donating 15 durable bus shelters to the Macon Transit Authority—a project inspired by CEO Eric Williams' late grandmother and designed to offer accessible protection in all weather. The shelters, made in-house with advertisement space for long-term sustainability, will be installed in the coming months to support community transit needs.  13WMAZ
  • Lake Tobesofkee will host its 28th annual Sparks Over the Park Independence Day Celebration on July 4 with live music, fireworks and family fun. Gates at Claystone, Sandy Beach and Arrowhead parks will open at 8 a.m. and close at 10 p.m., with live music at Sandy Beach Park (6:30 to 9:30 p.m.) and a fireworks show (9:15 p.m.) that offers the best view.  41 WMGT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Macon will soon welcome The Social Duck, a new entertainment center offering duckpin bowling, food, drinks and hourly lane rentals. General manager Mark Bell said the venue will open by the end of the month at (476 2nd Street) (operating Monday through Thursday from 4-10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.)  41 WMGT

CRIME NEWS

  • Macon mother Paula Platt continues her fight for justice after her son Stephen Fossett died in custody on May 25 following an altercation in which deputies tased him several times — she demands that all evidence be released and that deputies be held accountable even as mayor Lester Miller’s jail reforms launched on June 10 offer changes to mental health and jail conditions.  The Macon Melody
  • A Macon man, Jeffery Hunter, Jr., spent 6.5 years in county jail due to an administrative error and was acquitted on June 17 after witnesses confirmed his alibi—his lawyers said his wrongful detention robbed him of years of freedom.  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artificial intelligence is being used to restore ancient artifacts and decode lost languages by comparing patterns from similar works—Italian experts are reassembling Pompeii frescoes while Macon’s Impact XR uses virtual reality to let visitors explore historic worlds.  The Macon Melody

  • Macon resident Leroy Thomas hit a large pothole at the Fulton and Broadway intersection in front of U.S. Steele that exposed a railroad cross and damaged his tires — he reported the hazard to officials and now plans to work with Georgia DOT to fix the road.  WGXA

  • Lisa Johnson had her second hospital visit and a colonoscopy that found stage 3 colon cancer and a large mass on her right side—her doctors performed urgent surgery.  13WMAZ

  • Mercer grad Sawyer Gipson-Long returned to the majors with the Detroit Tigers after recovering from Tommy John surgery, pitching in relief and lowering his ERA below 4.00. Middle Georgia State named Steven Rhodes as the new women’s basketball coach as the school transitions to NCAA Division II—promising a focus on holistic student-athlete growth.  The Macon Melody
