  • Camp Zion updated its summer camp schedule to keep kids safe as temperatures rise—staff ensure extra hydration and rest breaks to help children cope. The camp is following strict safety protocols to protect all participants during the heat.  13WMAZ
  • Families in Macon can register today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bloomfield Gilead Recreation Center for free weekly literacy-based classes designed to strengthen family bonds and reduce youth violence; the program, open to 12 families, starts July 10 and meets every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. until September 4—each session includes meals, reading materials and a free ICEE pop for children.  41 WMGT

  • Inmate Sanchez Jackson died at Macon State Prison last Wednesday after being stabbed—officials are investigating his death amid a violent week in Georgia prisons.  13WMAZ

FINANCE NEWS

  • Georgians who filed state tax returns in 2023 and 2024 and paid taxes can expect refunds—up to $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of households and $500 for married couples filing jointly—as the Georgia Department of Revenue sends funds in batches. Residents in Macon advised that if their refund has not arrived, they should check eligibility with the online tool.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert proposed a high-speed rail linking Atlanta, Macon and Savannah during the county commission meeting last Tuesday—he said the plan would ease traffic and repurpose old rail lines, and local officials are set to review the proposal. This effort aims to improve regional transportation and address the growing cargo traffic from the port in Savannah.  WGXA

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Social Duck is set to open by the end of this month in downtown Macon, bringing duckpin bowling to the area with a smaller ball and pins—designed for all ages with no shoe swaps needed—and offering unique food like duck sliders and duck wontons to boost downtown foot traffic.  WGXA
