COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb is offering a summer program called Lead With Literacy to help 12 families build stronger bonds through weekly meetings with family coaches that include discussions, games, and shared reading. Families must register on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Bloomfield Gilead Recreation Center and then meet every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. from July 10 through Sept. 4.  WGXA
  • The Salvation Army opened a cooling center at 1955 Broadway in Macon on Monday at noon to help residents cope with dangerous heat as the index rose above 110 degrees. Visitors can get food and cold water at the center and the agency is accepting donations if it stays open overnight.  41 WMGT

CRIME NEWS

  • Masked suspects robbed the Loves Travel Stop and Delux Hotel overnight in South Bibb—Bibb County Sheriff's Office said the two incidents are part of a robbery spree.  13WMAZ
  • Bibb County Sheriff's Office is searching for a man who robbed Academy Sports + Outdoors on Tuesday afternoon when he grabbed several items and threatened a clerk with a gun before riding away on a bike north on Key Street, and police say he is a Black male aged from 30 to 40 with no one hurt.  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Central Georgia is set to host a week of Independence Day events starting June 26, with counties planning live music, food trucks, activities, and fireworks. Communities such as Jones, Centerville, and Warner Robins will offer family-friendly celebrations—giving residents many ways to enjoy America's birthday.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • William R. 'Will' Keyes was sworn in as the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia on Tuesday at noon at the C.B. King United States Courthouse in Albany—covering 70 counties including Macon—and will lead federal prosecutions for over 2 million people.  41 WMGT
  • The Macon Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission denied Ingleside Baptist Church Student Ministries’ request for a new double sided digital billboard at 863 Wimbish Road near Riverside Drive because it is too close to another digital billboard across Interstate 75. The church wanted the sign to help bring in money after Lamar Advertising ended its contract in February.  The Macon Newsroom
