- ➤ Macon Mental Health Matters earned a national social impact award for its innovative outreach by offering free group therapy, drum circles, and classes to help residents improve their mental health. The program served 6,000 people in 3 years and nearly 500 this year—showing how Bibb County works to remove barriers to care. WGXA
- ➤ Since Tuesday, the Salvation Army of Greater Macon cooling center at 1955 Broadway served three women and four men during 100-degree days while offering meals and ice-cold water for everyone. It is open every day when temperatures hit 100 degrees and now seeks donations (wash cloths, water, snacks, magazines, board games, monetary contributions). 41 WMGT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Georgia’s legislature approved a one-time surplus tax refund of up to $500 per household in a $1 billion package—eligible taxpayers who owed state tax in 2023 and filed on time will have their refunds deposited daily in batches to ease system load. 13WMAZ
- ➤ Bibb County leaders said the jail audit hit its halfway point on Wednesday as the inmate count dropped from 1,018 to 944 following Mayor Miller’s overhaul plan announced on June 10. Officials plan to release 150 non-violent inmates after they meet job training and treatment requirements. 13WMAZ
- ➤ Macon Transit Authority announced it will soft launch its new rideshare service Rapid Transit as a closed pilot on July 7, testing select riders with fares of $5 until 6 p.m. and $8 after—while the agency also extends fixed-route and paratransit service hours on weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.—with Saturday hours remaining the same.
