  • Mike Seekins—known as Big Dog—died on Wednesday at 9 p.m. and Famous Mike's of Macon will be closed for a few days as his family decides next steps.  13WMAZ
  • Macon and Middle Georgia are set to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks at sites like Luther Williams Field and Lake Tobesofkee, along with a neighborhood parade in Ingleside beginning at 10 a.m. while Warner Robins hosts its celebration today from 6-11 p.m.—other nearby cities such as Milledgeville, Juliette and Centerville have planned festive events for the holiday.  The Macon Melody

CRIME NEWS

  • A 21-year-old man was killed in a shooting in east Macon on Thursday night.  13WMAZ
  • A 31-year-old Macon man, Corey Deshawn Jackson, pleaded guilty on June 26 to voluntary manslaughter and firearm possession by a convicted felon—he will serve 20 years in prison for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend after weeks of stalking her in 2022.  WGXA
  • Authorities arrested convicted felon Stephan Cole Smith after a six-hour manhunt that began on June 26 when he fled a traffic stop on Sgoda Road, crashed at the Bibb County Training Center, and ran into a wooded area near Lower Poplar Street in Macon + he now faces multiple charges including weapons possession.  41 WMGT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local leaders say the Fort Hawkins blockhouse is showing signs of decay as chunks of its concrete replica have fallen and rust has set in—an engineer will assess the site next month to help plan repairs and fundraising efforts.  41 WMGT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews from McLeRoy, Inc. repaved College Street between Walnut and Georgia Avenue on June 26 and 27 as part of Macon-Bibb’s $50 million Paving the Way initiative funded by SPLOST and state grants+ residents were told to keep driveways clear by avoiding parking along the work zone. If inclement weather delayed work, crews will resume on June 30 or July 1+ officials will provide further updates.  41 WMGT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts warn that rising temperatures can cause dangerous heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Michael Hokanson from the Georgia Department of Public Health said residents—especially older people and outdoor workers—should drink water, rest in shade, and call 911 if symptoms worsen.  13WMAZ
  • Health officials warn that high temperatures can cause dangerous heat illnesses — such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid long periods outside during the heat.  13WMAZ
