COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cullen Cummings has grown his sandwich-making effort into a volunteer team that, last week, made 392 sandwiches to stock community fridges around Macon. The group meets each Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church — and plans to expand its delivery to more fridges in the area.  The Macon Melody

CRIME NEWS

  • A 36-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot a 25-year-old man in the leg following a verbal argument in Macon—police said the incident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Thursday and that the victim was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.  WGXA
  • Eighteen inmates at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center are facing new charges — including felony murder and aggravated assault — after a June 4 incident that left one inmate dead and injured five others during a Wednesday altercation, and investigators are continuing their probe.  41 WMGT
  • Four Macon men pleaded guilty in March to a meth trafficking conspiracy and were sentenced to federal prison after a DEA investigation — which included assistance from sheriff offices in Bibb, Peach and Monroe counties.  WGXA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southwest High School students are taking part in a mock trial exercise to practice legal procedures that could lead to future careers in law — the program provides hands-on courtroom experience.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb County Commissioner Stanley Stewart declared July 10 as Mike Clark Jr. Day when he presented a proclamation to the local recording artist on his birthday at Vibez restaurant in Downtown Macon.  WGXA
  • At a recent Macon Water Authority meeting, frustrated property owners raised flood concerns while Finance Chair Dwight Jones said board members talked about off-agenda topics (reportedly breaking meeting rules). Jones asked for state oversight as board members argued over procedure (with some members laughing) while community members called for help with recurring flooding issues.  The Macon Newsroom

HEALTH NEWS

  • Macon’s American Red Cross said donating blood is critical as someone in the county needs blood every two seconds + the center hosts drives every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and with summer travel raising accident risks, donors help keep a steady supply to save lives.  41 WMGT
