- ➤ Macon's Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia's Bargain Center Thrift Store is celebrating its 21st anniversary today with savings of 30% to 70%—a sale running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.—at its 6601 Zebulon Road location. WGXA
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Trader Joe’s will open a new store in Peachtree City soon, making it the closest location for Central Georgia shoppers and cutting the drive from Macon from about two hours to 1 hour 40 minutes. The store at 258 City Circle is set to open later this year – more details will come from Trader Joe’s. 13WMAZ
- ➤ Middle Georgia Regional Airport will start offering direct, twice-weekly Spirit Airlines flights to Fort Lauderdale in mid-October using an Airbus A320 (with 176 seats) while officials expect the new route to double passenger numbers from 15,000 to 30,000 (tickets start at $49 one way). - ➤ A 30-year-old mother of five was fatally shot behind a Little Caesars on Raines Lane in Bibb County on Tuesday evening when she was on her dinner break—Bibb County Sheriff said the investigation is still ongoing. 13WMAZ
- ➤ A large law enforcement presence arrived at a home on Summerhill Drive on July 17—where Bibb County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Marshals searched for 18-year-old Nicholas Floyd, who allegedly set fire to a home on Madden Avenue, shot his grandmother and held his younger brother hostage—but they did not find him. - ➤ The Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon has an immersive exhibit called Plume that fills the Burgess Gallery with light, sound, and motion and will run through October. The installation by Ian Brill — a Penn State professor — gives visitors a chance to experience art in a new and high-tech way. The Macon Melody
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Stargazers across Middle Georgia saw the Perseids meteor shower begin on July 17 and it will continue until August 23, with a peak occurring on August 12–13. Observers are advised to find a dark spot—free of city lights—to view about 25 bright meteors per hour and occasional fireballs. Middle Georgia Times
