COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army of Greater Macon partnered with Walmart to host its annual 'Stuff the Bus' school supply drive — volunteers braved the heat on Friday to collect notebooks, pencils, backpacks and donations for local families. The supplies will benefit 25 children in the Salvation Army shelter and a giveaway is set for July 25 at 10 a.m. at the Broadway location while items last.  41 WMGT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Public Safety said off-road vehicles including MPOHVs, ATVs, LSVs and golf carts have been involved in 42 crashes since January, resulting in 13 deaths and 64 serious injuries—officials urged drivers to follow safety guidelines after a 16-year-old and a 39-year-old died in May and June crashes.  13WMAZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Early this morning, deputies responded just before 3 a.m. near Daisy Tequila and Margarita Bar on Cherry Street after reports of gunshots led them to find a 49-year-old man with a head injury from an alleged assault—paramedics treated and transported him to a local hospital where he was later released.  41 WMGT
  • BSO says an assault near a downtown Macon bar left one person hurt—gunshots were heard in the area.  13WMAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Johnny Collins, 28, died on Wednesday when he tried to rescue two children who also lost their lives in the Ocmulgee River at Amerson River Park. Friends and fellow artists remember his vibrant music and community spirit—he was known as Coolhand Yung—and a vigil to honor his life is planned for Sunday at 7 p.m. at Central High School.  13WMAZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA data shows that Macon’s regular gas price increased from $2.943 to $2.952 last week and Warner Robins saw a rise from $2.827 to $2.843—Georgia’s average remains below the national rate at $2.914 compared to $3.155.  13WMAZ
  • Fort Valley leaders opened a new travel stop named Express 49 on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—it drew over 100 cars with incentives such as $1.76 gas prices, food, and family-friendly festivities. Mayor Jeffery Lundy said the project, years in the making, holds promise for boosting the local economy and sparking further development in Peach County.  WGXA
