CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities say Maurtez Edwards, 23, faced charges for child cruelty, home invasion and assault on officers after allegedly abducting his 2-month-old son from a Macon apartment during a domestic dispute on Sunday—law enforcement in Bibb County and Liberty County coordinated a swift pursuit that ended with the infant examined and reunited with his mother.  13WMAZ
  • A family is suing Bibb County Schools, alleging that officials ignored red flags and failed to protect their special needs daughter from alleged repeated sexual abuse by paraprofessional Cedric Goolsby—who was arrested in 2023 and faces charges of child molestation, false imprisonment, and sexual assault.  13WMAZ
  • The family of construction worker Richard Rad Dykes is offering a $12,000 reward for information on the hit-and-run driver who killed him while his crew repaired a guardrail on I-75 near mile marker 109 in Dooly County on June 17—state patrol investigators are reviewing video, cell phone data and social media for clues.  13WMAZ

  • Middle Georgia educators and mental health experts have offered tips today to help students and parents manage back-to-school anxiety, noting that physical signs like a racing heart and sweating may occur during transitions—a steady breath and open talk with teachers can ease these feelings.  41 WMGT
  • On the first day of school at Bruce Elementary, mentors from 100 Black Men greeted students with supportive words and high-fives. Principal Kizzie Lott said the partnership helps the school develop the whole child — a key step in preparing students for their next academic stage.  41 WMGT
  • Bibb County school zone speed cameras resumed operation when classes started Monday morning as Bibb County Sheriff David Davis warned drivers to obey limits during the hour before and after school—new cameras were added at MLK Jr. and John Lewis Elementary. The cameras will ticket drivers going 10 mph over the speed limit.  13WMAZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Macon officials closed parts of Amerson River Park trails—along with the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and Spring Street boat ramp—today as rising river levels posed safety risks. They said the closures will remain until the river drops and cleanup is complete.  41 WMGT

  • A pipe replacement project will start on August 11 on Spring Street between Walnut and Mulberry as contractors work daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. until fall (drivers should expect delays and use caution).  41 WMGT
