Good morning, Macon. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 14th of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • Bibb County Sheriff's Office launched a new Cold-Case Unit in July to review unsolved cases like Barbara Crenshaw's 1996 homicide discovered near the Echeconnee River—retired investigator Jack Côté leads the unit using advanced DNA analysis and urges anyone with information to contact Macon Regional Crimestoppers.  13WMAZ
  • Inside Bibb County Jail, Changing Mindsets Inc. holds weekly sessions where inmates hear messages from advocates urging them to break the cycle of crime and choose a safer path. The program aligns with county justice reform as rotating guest speakers and community groups — such as the NAACP and River Edge Behavioral Health — offer guidance to reduce recidivism.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wesleyan College welcomed students back on Monday as they started the 2025-26 school year with returning students and new faces coming together for classes.  WPGA News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Peach County EMS has adopted a new cardiac arrest protocol that keeps patients on scene using advanced cardiac resuscitation—paramedics learned the new methods from experts in California and Kansas to reduce risks and improve survival rates. They have already trained 600 people in hands-on CPR and plan to train more residents soon.  41 WMGT
  • A Crawford County mother of five says breastfeeding is a great option for babies. Piedmont Hospital in Macon supports mothers by offering resources to help them start and continue breastfeeding.  13WMAZ
  • Today, a UGA study warns that a severe CNA shortage is hurting long-term care in Central Georgia as many nursing homes nationwide struggle to hire staff and fear closing if the gap is not fixed soon—especially where budgets are tight. The report shows that low pay, recruitment issues and COVID’s effects make it hard for facilities to care for patients and they may cut the number of residents if staffing does not improve.  13WMAZ
