- ➤ Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia will host the 13th Annual Heart of the Dragon Boat Races on September 20 at Sandy Beach on Lake Tobesofkee in Macon — teams from across the Southeast will compete and fundraise to support local mentoring programs. Local groups including businesses, churches, schools, gyms and military organizations can register with fees starting at $800. 41 WMGT
- ➤ Legendary hiker Gene Espy, a longtime Macon resident who was the second to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, died at 98 on August 22 in Alpharetta. Funeral services are set for Saturday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m.—visitation begins at 10 a.m. with a reception afterward at Highland Hills Baptist Church. The Macon Melody
- ➤ Joe Posey hosts the 10th Mary Elizabeth Memorial Golf Tournament at Houston Lake Country Club to honor his granddaughter who died of leukemia at age 11 and to support children battling cancer. He recently underwent major bladder surgery and expects the event—with morning and afternoon sessions and a silent auction—to match or exceed last year’s nearly $100,000 in fundraising when it takes place on Monday, Sept. 1. 13WMAZ

- ➤ Warner Robins warns residents of fake property tax scam calls that threaten arrest if payments aren’t made—officials say the Tax Division will never call and residents should hang up and report suspicious calls. WGXA
- ➤ Bibb County Sheriff's Office said a man was shot in the leg in a Macon neighborhood at around 12:21 a.m. on the 2000 block of Cedar Avenue—he was taken to hospital with a non-life-threatening injury and the investigation is ongoing. WGXA

- ➤ Macon’s historic Burke Mansion will host its first overnight ghost hunt on October 3 with a wine reception—featuring cocktails and hors d’oeuvres—and a guided paranormal investigation led by actress Carrie Genzel, spiritual medium Morrighan Lynne, and paranormal investigator Jonathan Morgan. Guests will choose between a basic ticket and a luxury package that offers an overnight stay and extra themed experiences. 41 WMGT
- ➤ Today, the Macon Music Revue will host an album release party at Grant’s Lounge on Poplar Street at 9 p.m.—tickets cost $10 and the debut album will be available on the night of the event. The band, which celebrates Macon’s musical heritage with over 140 songs, noted that the annual McDuffie Center for Strings Labor Day Festival was cancelled this year but will return next year. - ➤ Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller is proposing new property tax exemptions for seniors and will ask state lawmakers to support a resolution at the next commission meeting. If approved, seniors aged 65 will receive up to $34,000 in exemptions, those 75 up to $64,000 and those 85 and older will pay no property taxes—measures that will take effect Jan. 1 next year—aimed at supporting local spending. - ➤ High school football had a rough Week 2 when a brawl in the Northeast–Southwest game led officials to suspend play and award a 30–8 win while the GHSA investigates the incident.
