COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The annual Macon Witches Float will begin on October 5th at Amerson River Park, where costumed paddlers will float along the Ocmulgee River to Bragg Jam South River Access to raise funds for Macon Periods Easier — participants will decorate their vessels and donate feminine hygiene products for a chance to win a $100 prize and enter additional prize drawings. The event offers a fun way to support the community by fighting period poverty.  41 WMGT
  • The Salvation Army of Macon has added a computer lab with 11 desks and 10 laptops, a 12-passenger van for veterans and a minivan for shelter residents—donations from the Peyton Anderson Foundation and Navicent Health—bringing new resources that will help carry clients to appointments and support families.  41 WMGT
  • The first-ever Macon Restaurant Week starts Friday and more than a dozen downtown restaurants will offer exclusive dishes at four price points as part of a partnership by Macon Magazine and NewTown Macon. Diners can pick up a passport to collect stamps for a chance to win prizes — including a $500 gift card.  41 WMGT

  • Georgia College invested $850k in new security measures to boost campus safety—steps taken after a student said they feel very safe on campus and that extra protections are needed.  13WMAZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents on Hall Road in North Macon oppose the Planning and Zoning Commission’s decision to rezone land for a used car auction lot because they fear deforestation and erosion — they worry clearing over 30 acres could open the door to more developments near sensitive floodplains. The board voted 4 to 1 on August 25 despite staff recommendations to deny the change.  WGXA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new traffic light now operates at Sardis Church Road and Frank Amerson Parkway in Macon to manage increased traffic from business growth.  13WMAZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Macon-Bibb Community Enhancement Authority in Pleasant Hill has struggled with money and leadership since the county cut ties, leaving several new homes boarded up and hard to sell. The group will work with local housing partners to fix the homes and rebuild trust—but challenges remain in meeting its GDOT contract requirements.  The Macon Melody

SPORTS NEWS

  • Middle Georgia State University held a ribbon cutting to open new competition and event facilities at Georgia Premier Cross Country Course at 3450 Fulton Mill Road in Macon–the site includes two climate-controlled buildings joined by an open-air pavilion, a refreshed course starting line for up to 1,000 competitors, and ample parking for team buses. The project was funded by a $1.24 million federal grant and $311,000 in SPLOST support and will host sports meets that are expected to boost county revenue and tourism.  41 WMGT
