COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rubber ducks will race down the Ocmulgee River this Saturday at Amerson River Park to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Central Georgia's Triple Play program, which supports health, education and wellness for local children. Tickets cost $10 and the race will run from 10 a.m. to noon with a grand prize of $2,500 — helping the Club serve nearly 1,000 children daily.  13WMAZ
  • Crisis Line and Safe House of Central Georgia will host Sip Sip Hooray on Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Terminal Station in Macon — the event will feature a five-course wine tasting menu from Compass Rose Cafe and will benefit victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.  41 WMGT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Muscogee Creek Nation leaders toured the historic DeWitt McCrary house in East Macon to check a site for a new cultural center — a project that will share their true history and boost local tourism near the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. Officials said the site, saved in 2021, will need more funding to complete the project.  The Macon Newsroom

  • Byron Elementary received the John Hancock award for its 4th graders who can write in cursive—state Superintendent Richard Woods presented a proficiency ribbon and provided constitution books for further practice.  41 WMGT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deputy Rebecca Galeazzo removed a timber rattlesnake—nicknamed 'Sir Buzzy Pants'—from a Burger King playground in west Macon last week and placed it in a bucket to be safely transported away.  13WMAZ
  • The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville earned the National Cemetery Administration’s Operational Excellence Award Tuesday for its high standards in appearance, maintenance, and operations—one of only six cemeteries awarded nationwide. State Senator Floyd Griffin presented the resolution and Cemetery Director Linda Lavender praised her team's work to honor veterans.  13WMAZ
  • The Georgia Ethics Commission fined Macon-Bibb mayor Lester Miller, Rep. Miriam Paris, Gary Bechtel and the group Go Big for Macon on Wednesday for breaking campaign finance rules. Miller moved $220,000 from his campaign to a nonprofit he helped start and got a $5,000 fine while Paris, Bechtel and Go Big for Macon received smaller fines for missing required filings (the violations took place between March and June last year).  The Macon Melody
  • Twiggs County commissioners will vote tonight at the county courthouse on rezoning 291.5 acres from agricultural to general industrial for a proposed data center on Adams Park Road near Hwy. 29—local residents voiced concerns about the project's unclear details and financial risks.  WGXA

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A study by the Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission and RKG Associates Inc. shows that many people are choosing Macon over Atlanta in search of townhomes—cottages and patio homes—that are near downtown shops and dining. The report finds that different areas of Macon attract various buyers with affordable options, and young adults aged 25 to 34 are moving in for easier commutes and local jobs.  41 WMGT

SPORTS NEWS

  • The ACE Gryphons—now 4—0 after a win over Wilkinson County—will play Northeast at home in their fourth meeting as they try to win their first game against the Raiders. The team will use its strong running game and solid defense before kickoff at 7:30 p.m. on Perkins Field.  41 WMGT
