COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia launched the Paint the Town Green campaign to encourage schools, businesses, and organizations in Middle Georgia—supporting youth mentoring by adding green to their spaces. Betsy Fitzgerald said that mentors give young people new perspectives and help them learn good habits.  41 WMGT
  • Vibez Brunch Bar and Grill on Cherry Street will close on October 19—its final day of service. The restaurant thanked the local community for support since opening in July 2021 and invited patrons to join its special events over its last 30 days.  WGXA
  • On Thursday, Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful received $55,000 in grant money for recycling and beautification initiatives—funds that will support community improvement.  WPGA News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Macon Pops, which has led downtown holiday festivities since 2018, may not host its annual Christmas Spectacular concert this holiday season as rising production costs + low donations leave insufficient funds for stage construction. The nonprofit needs a $25,000 sponsor donation to keep the event going that has drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors and generated a $7.1 million boost to the local economy before.  The Macon Melody

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bibb County School District received about $197M from the state through ESPLOST, exceeding its cap of $185M and funding school renovations, new buses and technology upgrades—while the state will stop collecting the tax in October. The district now plans to pass a new tax measure on Nov. 4 to collect $250M for further school projects.  The Macon Melody

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jones County officials approved new zoning ordinances with environmental protections and noise restrictions to guide potential data center development—no developers have applied yet. County administrators and residents are now studying the economic impacts and benefits of the plan.  13WMAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Piedmont Macon Medical Center Oncology services received a donation from Central Georgia Cancer Care Foundation that will help expand free wellness programs for nearly 500 patients monthly. The funds will support grief support groups, nutrition counseling and creative arts healing classes — essential services for cancer patients and families.  41 WMGT
  • A Macon mother warned families about lead poisoning after her son was diagnosed with the illness from old lead paint in their rental home—she urged renters to have homes inspected to reduce health risks.  13WMAZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northeast defeated ACE 29-0 at Perkins Field in Macon Friday night as quarterback Jordan Wiggins threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns while the defense forced five turnovers. Coach Jeremy Wiggins said the team will fix its penalties before the rematch with Dublin next week — the win keeps them undefeated in regional play.  The Macon Melody
