COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dozens of motorcycle riders will gather this Saturday at Harley-Davidson in Macon and ride to Warm Springs to honor Tyee Browne—a Crisp County deputy killed during a July traffic stop. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the ride starts at 11:30 a.m. while his family accepts donations for a future law enforcement scholarship.  13WMAZ
  • This Saturday, dozens of motorcycle riders and drivers will ride in central Georgia (Sept. 27) to honor fallen deputy Tyee Browne (killed in the line of duty) as community organizers prepare to unite local residents in remembering his service.  13WMAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kathryn Fakeley, a junior at Mercer's McDuffie Center for Strings, was the featured soloist at the Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra season opener on Monday, September 22nd at the Piedmont Grand Opera House—she played the Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor. Guest conductor Joseph Young led additional works and her performance, following her win in the university concerto competition, marked a milestone for the local music scene—her parents attended their first event in Macon.  The Macon Melody
  • John T. Edge, a well-known ESPN host and writer, will sign his new memoir House of Smoke: A Southerner Goes Searching for Home at Hay House in Macon today—he will be joined by Georgia Public Broadcasting’s Josephine Bennett as part of a tour that starts Sept. 16 and spans 24 cities to share his deep South story. Edge, who grew up in Middle Georgia, draws on his roots to explore the past and present of the region.  The Macon Melody

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former teacher and mother Shecondria Duncan launched Neurostars Phonics Factory in Macon to help children with autism and dyslexia learn to read, write and spell using multi-sensory lessons—each session is designed for a child’s own pace. The nonprofit aims to fill gaps in public school teaching and offers families a safe, supportive learning environment.  41 WMGT
  • On Monday, the academy's principal Lara Relyea retired after a flag controversy over not lowering the flag on Sept. 11 — the decision led to objections from many local community members and state officials. Former head Laura Perkins came out of retirement to serve as interim principal as the school starts a national search for a permanent leader.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A large crowd came to a recent Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections meeting where people spoke out about planned changes to how officers are chosen and the board will vote on new rules in October. The River Edge Community Service Board said it must find new headquarters — delays from soil issues and a funding gap may push back its $32.5M clinic project.  The Macon Newsroom
  • Sen. Jon Ossoff spoke today at the Rotary Club of Macon on economic uncertainty, healthcare cuts and local projects — including a new control tower at Robins Air Force Base and plans to make Ocmulgee Mounds a national park. He criticized federal trade policies and warned that Medicaid cuts are straining rural hospitals.  41 WMGT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Costco recalled over 3,300 pounds of Kirkland Signature Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke—sold on September 18—for possible listeria contamination after a green onion tested positive for the bacteria. Shoppers are told to discard the product immediately for a full refund.  13WMAZ
