COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This weekend at Memorial Park in Warner Robins, Genesis Joy House will host a sleepout from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to raise awareness of homelessness among female veterans and connect them with support from local partners—helping the community understand the challenges these veterans face.  WPGA News
  • Loaves and Fishes Ministry hosted its first annual Walk a Mile in My Shoes fundraiser on Sept. 20 to raise funds and awareness for Macon’s homeless community—residents walked 3 miles starting at The Tubman Museum with stops at local churches and shelters. Participants also had the option to join virtually, with ticket sales supporting community services for those in need.  The Macon Melody

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wanna Tuft Studios—started by best friends Tonia Williams and Parrisha Simmons—opened in downtown Macon and offers tufting classes for beginners, inviting locals to try a new art form.  13WMAZ
  • Mount de Sales Marching Cavaliers were spotlighted as the 41NBC Band of the Week — sponsored by the Otis Redding Center for the Arts and Young America Music Schools. Band director Sarah Corum said the students’ hard work and energy make the group a special part of the Mount de Sales community.  41 WMGT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Head of School at the Academy for Classical Education in Macon retired after backlash over not lowering flags on Sept. 11, and the board thanked her service. Co-founder Laura Perkins has returned as Interim Head — and the board will soon begin a nationwide search for her permanent replacement.  WGXA

FINANCE NEWS

  • One year after Hurricane Helene, Georgia homeowners are still fixing severe damage that caused over $2.5 billion in losses and led to 165,000 insurance claims. Angel Johnson spent more than $300K repairing her home and her husband’s shop while independent agent John Payne said statewide insurance rates have risen since 2020—raising concerns that costs may soon go up further.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb County commissioners approved Jericho Design Group to design a jail expansion that will add 150 beds and improve inmate health services; the project will cost between $28 and $31 million — it will begin with parking changes before a groundbreaking in 2026.  41 WMGT
  • At the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission meeting, commissioners asked for legal advice on limiting vape shops and deferred a decision on rezoning 37.5 acres on Houston Road due to neighbor concerns — including traffic, noise and environmental impacts. They approved a small digital billboard at 5605 Hawkinsville Road and will require a redesigned apartment layout at the Oct. 27 meeting to address further issues.  The Macon Newsroom
  • On Tuesday night, the Bibb County Commission approved Jericho Design Group for a jail expansion that will add a new parking area, upgrade the current jail, and include a moveable maximum security housing section—work estimated at about $28 to $32 million to be completed in 14 to 16 months after a construction manager request is posted. The county also selected PBK Architects for a new arena planned next to the Macon Coliseum—its final cost is pending and completion is expected by Summer 2028.  13WMAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Piedmont Macon will host a free Breathe Easy class on Oct. 13 at the Macon Volunteer Clinic from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. A health expert — Sirena Fritz — will lead the session to teach strategies for managing asthma and COPD.  41 WMGT

SPORTS NEWS

  • FPD beat Tattnall 11-8 in nine innings last Tuesday when Addison Arnold hit a three-run home run—delivering the go-ahead hit after the team lost a 6-1 lead in the seventh inning. The win ties FPD for the region lead while Tattnall will play again on Oct. 2—coach Shaun Bridger praised his team’s resilience and noted ace pitcher Gracyn Fuller struck out 16 batters in nine innings.  The Macon Melody
