COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On October 13, the new Cathy Ivey Community Library—named for a longtime volunteer who promoted reading and community—will open on Forsyth Road to serve North and West Macon-Bibb. The facility will also feature a Friends workroom to honor her contributions.  WGXA

CRIME NEWS

  • The Secrets and Stilettos event in Macon will be held on Saturday to raise awareness about sex trafficking—Georgia has confirmed over 5,000 cases in the past five years and speakers like Cyntoia Brown will share their experiences to help the community recognize signs of exploitation.  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, GABBAfest in Macon celebrates the legacy of the Allman Brothers Band with a free Gallery West reception from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.—fans from around the world have already arrived and the festival will continue Friday through Sunday with ticketed shows at the Grand Opera House and free events at historic sites like the Big House and Rose Hill Cemetery.  WGXA
  • The 2025 Georgia National Fair will begin on Oct. 2 at the National Fairgrounds in Perry with gates opening at 3 p.m. on the first day and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily through Oct. 12. Attendees will enjoy concerts, food fights, a corn dog eating contest, rides and nightly fireworks—advanced tickets are available online until Oct. 1 with discounts on Oct. 8 and free admission for military and first responders on select days.  WGXA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mercer University broke enrollment records by welcoming 1,130 new residential students and 114 transfer students this term — its popular majors include biology, biochemistry and neuroscience while a new nursing program lets students finish on the Macon campus. The school works to support local healthcare needs as it focuses on student retention and academic success.  41 WMGT
  • Happy Wyatt of Georgia Grown brings her chickens to Middle Georgia classrooms to teach students about egg incubation and poultry care—programs that show agriculture's role in our state. At Hubbard Elementary in Monroe County, the hands-on experience helps spark interest in the industry that drives local farming.  WGXA
  • Rep. Tangie Herring worked with Vision to Learn and Bibb County Public Schools to give free eye exams, vision screenings and glasses to nearly 60 Hartley Elementary students on Sept. 16 and 17—helping remove a barrier to learning.  WGXA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Macon Water Authority board reviewed options to raise water rates to help pay for $250 million in upgrades by 2030—options ranged from a 3% to a 9% increase. The board will decide on the final plan at its next meeting on Oct. 2 at Second Street headquarters.  The Macon Melody
  • Macon-Bibb County Commissioners approved design contracts for a jail expansion and a new arena next to the Coliseum. Jericho Design Group will design the jail expansion that adds 150 beds—including 96 maximum-security and 24 mental health beds—and PBK Architects will design the arena with groundbreaking set for July while the Coliseum stays open.  The Macon Melody

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northeast won 29-0 over ACE last week and now hosts Dublin as both teams, ranked in the Top 10, fight for Region 2-A Division I championship hopes while Stratford stayed unbeaten with a 41-14 win over Brookstone and will travel to face John Milledge. Other matchups this week will test local teams as they prepare for state playoffs + add extra pressure in a competitive schedule.  The Macon Melody
  • The Macon Bacon announced today that former MLB pitcher Jesse Litsch will lead the team as head coach for the 2026 season — he played eight years for the Toronto Blue Jays and spent four seasons coaching summer collegiate teams including a 26-3 record year with the Sanford River Rats in 2025.  41 WMGT
  • Senior running back Ty Cummings was named Week Six Player of the Week by Georgia High School Football Daily after he rushed for 223 yards and two touchdowns in West Laurens’ 26-21 win over Harlem. His 62-yard touchdown run with 11:12 remaining gave his team the win — and he is now just seven yards shy of 500 rushing yards this season while nearing school records.  41 WMGT
