COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Middle Georgia State University Tuesday, community members picked up ceramic bowls and a bowl of soup at the first Empty Bowls fundraiser organized by the school and the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank to fight food insecurity affecting nearly 117,000 locals—each dollar raised feeds eight people.  The Macon Melody

CULTURE NEWS

  • GABBA Fest will begin its 33rd annual celebration in Macon as fans gather for concerts and community events. Headliner Randall Bramblett Band with the MegaBlaster Horns will perform tomorrow at the Piedmont Grand Opera House—an event expected to draw music lovers from around the world.  The Macon Melody
  • Lake Tobesofkee will host its first Oc-Tobo-Fest at Sandy Beach Park from October 24 to October 26 as a three-day festival offering live music, a craft fair, local vendors, food trucks and a kid zone. Admission will be $3 per person and children under 6 may enter free.  41 WMGT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Georgia Department of Labor data showed that in August, unemployment in Warner Robins held at 3.3% and in Macon at 4.2%, with fewer people searching for jobs yet more residents working than last year. Employers reported rising job totals and payroll numbers+new unemployment claims remained low, signaling steady progress in the labor market.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bibb County School District has expanded its dual enrollment program so high school students can earn college credit by taking classes at universities outside Central Georgia—60 students have enrolled and partnerships include local and out-of-state colleges. Southwest High senior Destiny Curry said the program helps her save on tuition and prepare early for college.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb County commissioners approved hiring an award-winning firm to design a new arena with groundbreaking set for July— and they selected a Georgia company to design a new jail wing that will be built in 14 to 16 months— decisions made Tuesday evening.  The Macon Newsroom

HEALTH NEWS

  • Families and patients are asking Georgia lawmakers to let more people use medical marijuana — they say the current rules keep patients from getting the help they need — as they push for changes to the law.  13WMAZ
  • A free dementia workshop for caregivers will be held October 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Middle Georgia Regional Commission in Macon—Dr. Darlene Williams will share strategies based on her personal experience.  41 WMGT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Stratford head coach Paul Carroll said his Eagles improved in physicality with a 41-14 win over Brookstone that pushed them to a 5-0 start (they are the only unbeaten team in Bibb County). The team will next face John Milledge and FPD as they seek to build on their momentum.  The Macon Melody
