COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Macon’s annual Witches Float fundraiser returns on Oct. 5 at Amerson River Park after last year's cancellation due to Hurricane Helene; participants will dress in witch costumes, donate menstrual supplies to support Macon Periods Easier & have a chance to win prizes for creative watercraft decoration.  The Macon Melody
  • Fans filled Herb St. John Stadium Friday night as the Perry Panthers hosted the Veterans Warhawks. The community showed its support with students in school colors and families cheering—highlighted by Ingleside Village Pizza's FanCam coverage.  41 WMGT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spencer's will hold its grand opening on Oct. 4 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Shoppes at River Crossing (5080 Riverside Dr., Suite 312) where the first 100 guests will get $10 gift cards (with sweet treats, giveaways, and games available).  41 WMGT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Georgia National Fair will open at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter from October 2nd to October 12, 2025 — featuring over 50 food vendors, rides, live music on select nights, a livestock show, and other events; advance tickets start at $15 while children 10 and under get in free with a paying adult.  Middle Georgia Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wesleyan College has been ratified to join the NAIA’s Southern States Athletic Conference on July 1, 2026 — a move that will offer athletic scholarships and add new varsity sports including flag football, competitive cheer and wrestling. The college will complete its NCAA Division III season this year — paving a new path for student-athletes in Middle Georgia.  41 WMGT
  • Bibb County schools achieved a record graduation rate of 88.97%, beating the state average of 87.2% and rising nearly 37 points since 2012—Central, Southwest, and Rutland High Schools each reached over 90%. Superintendent Dr. Dan A. Sims said improved support programs helped lift scores, with Southwest and Northeast High Schools showing an 8% jump—strong evidence of ongoing progress.  41 WMGT
  • Bibb County Schools are hosting Attendance Awareness Week to fight growing absenteeism by holding rallies, parent outreach and spirit events - district leaders say the programs help identify barriers and support students and families post-Covid. The events aim to encourage regular attendance and build community support for student success.  41 WMGT
  • Peach County Schools Superintendent Dr. Lionel Brown is retiring after many years of service—Peach County Board of Education has started the search for his successor while schools remain stable during the transition.  41 WMGT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents are suing Twiggs County over a data center project because the county failed to post proper rezoning notice—placing the sign on the wrong property with the wrong date—which they say violated due process and raised concerns over utilities, wildlife and sacred sites.  13WMAZ
  • Captain Jacob Mathis at Robins Air Force Base learned his family has long served when he discovered his great great uncle, Col. Charles Thomas, was the base's first commander—strengthening his resolve as he now leads advanced building projects and air battle management operations.  13WMAZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mercer Volleyball player Aliyah Waldon died after battling bone cancer; she returned to Macon during treatment to cheer on her teammates. Her team asked the community to keep her family in their thoughts—her kind spirit united the volleyball family.  13WMAZ
  • The Macon Touchdown Club honored week seven high school football players on Monday night as First Presbyterian Day senior quarterback Major Simmons threw for 253 yards, four touchdowns and rushed for 103 yards in the Vikings win over Mount de Sales. Northeast senior linebacker Talien Sampson made 15 tackles and Jones County senior J.R. Clark returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown—Georgia Tech’s Brian Bohannon spoke as the guest.  41 WMGT
  • Thursday night, the Northeast Raiders and the ACE Gryphons played at Cavalier Fields—students, parents, and alumni cheered in school colors as the game showcased strong local spirit.  41 WMGT
  • Central Georgia released its Top Plays of the Week from September 29 with video clips showcasing the best sports moments in the region. The online feature—presented by 13WMAZ—displays key highlights that capture local athletic action.  13WMAZ
