COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Developers returned in Macon-Bibb to share and gather feedback on the updated strategic plan for the proposed Ocmulgee Mounds National Park—focusing on enhancing transportation and recreational areas while honoring Muscogee Creek traditions. They will hold public sessions in Warner Robins tomorrow and in Twiggs County next Monday to gather more input before finalizing the plan by the end of 2025 and presenting a resolution in January.  WGXA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb County will host the Hispanic Festival this October with cultural dances, music, and food that celebrate Hispanic heritage. The county will ensure the event is safe — a longtime flea market festival was cancelled last week due to ICE raid concerns.  WGXA
  • The ‘Macon Beyond’ series, led by Carrie Genzel, dives into ghost stories and history at Macon landmarks. This weekend, the team will lead a paranormal investigation at Burke Mansion—tickets have sold out and a video of the mansion will be released later in October.  The Macon Melody

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Georgia farmers affected by Hurricane Helene are still waiting for relief as state and federal officials have not finalized the distribution plan for the $531 million aid package — delays leave farms struggling to recover from heavy losses.  41 WMGT
  • The Georgia National Fair in Perry has boosted the local economy with a reported $6 million revenue last year as thousands visited and hotels sold out; the fair runs through Sunday, Oct. 12—local restaurants are busy with new customers and growing interest.  41 WMGT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since the government shutdown began at midnight Wednesday due to Congress failing to agree on Medicare and Medicaid funding, Dr. Greg George from Middle Georgia State University said Middle Georgians are facing furloughs and potential job cuts because of a $1.9 trillion deficit — though key services like the military and V.A. hospitals continue operating.  WGXA
  • Residents and local leaders met Wednesday at a pedestrian safety summit to discuss a $7 million Gray Highway project—adding a mile of sidewalk and a 3.5-mile multi-use trail—to reduce accidents and improve safety. Transportation officials said the improvements, funded by a Safe Streets for All grant, will be completed by 2029.  41 WMGT
