CULTURE NEWS

  • The Georgia National Fair in Perry is featuring new foods like pork belly dishes, a pina colada funnel cake, a Tybee Island hotdog with pimento cheese and a spicy pickled pizza that have drawn local attention. The fair runs through Sunday, October 12 — vendors will serve creative twists on classic treats — and many visitors are expected.  41 WMGT

  • Central Georgians face growing financial strain as a government shutdown enters day 10—many households report a $1,500 shortfall that challenges covering bills and basic needs.  13WMAZ
  • Central Georgia residents face financial strain on day 10 of the federal government shutdown as many federal workers experience a $1,500 paycheck shortage and local businesses work to support affected families. Robins Financial Credit Union has offered three relief programs—paycheck replacement, a furlough loan, and a skip-a-pay option—to help community members manage their expenses.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teen volunteer Wilson Griffis, a junior at Westfield, helped deliver newborn calves at the Georgia National Fair in Perry—gaining hands-on experience for his future as a veterinarian while working at Barrington Dairies near Montezuma. He delivered about 20 calves on his own and assisted with up to 200 during the busy birthing season.  The Macon Melody
  • Macon’s new library branch will be named the Cathy Ivey Community Library after the longtime local library legend, and a sign is up along Highway 41. The dedication will be held (at 1 p.m. Oct. 13) as the branch, relocated from the Riverside site, prepares to serve the north Macon community (honoring her legacy).  The Macon Melody
  • Mercer University chess club students lead weekly chess sessions at Roberts Academy to help students with dyslexia build focus & confidence.  13WMAZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • John Milledge overcame an early deficit to beat FPD 34 to 17 at George S. Johnson Stadium in Macon on October 10. FPD played without key player Major Simmons due to concussion protocol while freshman quarterback Cash Walker made his varsity debut as both teams prepared for the postseason.  The Macon Melody
  • The Tattnall Trojans (0-7, 0-1) played the Stratford Eagles (5-2, 0-2) Friday night at Eagle Field in Macon and lost despite having beaten Stratford in the past two seasons; the Trojans entered after a 10-0 loss to Mount de Sales that left them with just 32 points all season. The Eagles, who had recently lost 21-10 to FPD and 28-12 to Tattnall last season, improved their record with the win.  41 WMGT
  • On Friday night, Central Fellowship defeated Heritage Hawks 51-19 on Senior Night as running back Judson Walls returned from a two-week break with a broken elbow and played with his arm in a cast — he scored two touchdowns and energized the offense. The win improved the team's record to 4-4 and they will face cross-town rival Windsor next week.  The Macon Melody
  • Middle Georgia high school football scores from Week 9 were released showing matchups among teams such as John Milledge, Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, and Jones County — additional scores came from Wilcox, Dooly, Telfair and other areas.  41 WMGT
